NAACP Head Wants Barred Delegates Seated
AP via SFGate ^ | 2/12/8 | BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — A prominent civil rights leader has told the Democratic National Committee that refusing to seat delegates from Florida and Michigan would disenfranchise both states' minority communities.

In a Feb. 8 letter to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, NAACP chairman Julian Bond expressed "great concern at the prospect that million of voters in Michigan and Florida could ultimately have their votes completely discounted." Refusing to seat the states' delegations could remind voters of the "sordid history of racially discriminatory primaries," he said.

The DNC penalized Michigan and Florida for moving their primaries to earlier dates in violation of party rules. Both states were stripped of their delegates, and the party's presidential candidates signed a pledge not to campaign in either state. Florida lost 185 delegates; Michigan, 128.

Since then, facing the prospect of a drawn-out delegate battle with Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign has pushed hard for both states' delegations to be seated. Clinton won Florida's primary Jan. 29 and Michigan's Jan. 15, but was the only candidate to appear on the Michigan ballot after the other candidates removed their names.

In an interview, Bond said the NAACP had taken no position in the race between Clinton and Obama and would not endorse either candidate. He sent the letter on behalf of the voters in Michigan and especially Florida, where the Republican-controlled legislature and governor changed the state's primary date.

"It struck me as making the voters, including minority voters in Florida particularly, victims of the Republican legislature . . .

How can they fairly apportion these delegates, when the candidates were instructed to not campaign in these states? It seems that since Hillary Clinton violated that instruction, that she should forfeit any rights to such delegates.

well, get popcorn.

Maybe somehow he has a point if Florida’s Republican governor changed the date. But what about the Dems. in Michigan, why did they move their date up like that? There’s a Dem. governor in Michigan.

Isn't it correct that in one of the states (either Florida or Michigan), Barak Obama's name did not even appear on the ballot?

Why isn't Julian Bond talking about how the primary in that state disinfranchised minority (and other) voters??

Funny how Bond characterizes it as so much worse when done by the state with a Republican legislature than the state with the Democratic one.

How could the decision to disqualify these delegates affect minorities any more than "non-minorities"?

If the Michigan and Florida delegations are seated, you know that the fix is well and truly in. Hillary’s name was the only one on the Michigan ballot, and she still almost lost. For this, she is entitled to the delegates?

There are no delegates from Florida or Michigan. There were no primaries therefore no delegates.

The elections held are meaningless since they did not comply with DNC rules.

I was wondering how long the DNC was going to get a ‘pass’ on this decision. Apparently today’s Democrats aren’t too big on democracy.

Absolutely not. If Hillary’s lackeys try to pull this, the Obama people should force MI and FL to hold their primaries again, since the first ones were not deemed valid by the DNC for choosing candidates and the only candidate breaking the rules by campaigning there was Hillary. If Obama caves on this, he’s not strong enough to be President of the USA.

By party rules, they do not have to apportion these delegates, as the delegates will not be seated. As for Hillary, she is above all rules and laws, so she should not be affected by any party disciplinary measures.

Also, note that Mr. Bond did not mention the affiliation of all those discriminatory primaries. Wonder why??? Brought to you by Democrats, the party of Dred Scott, the Ku Klux Klan and Jim Crow.

lesse, don’t count the military vote, count all votes for Pat Buchanan as votes for AlGore (because they couldn’t possibly have voted for PB), recount cherry picked counties, substitute a new candidate for the old one when it becomes clear that the old one can’t possibly win.....

And now change the way delegates are counted. Tell me again, why I should vote for the Democratic Party?

While I fully expected there to be a push to get the Florida and Michigan delegates seated, I did NOT see it coming from the NAACLP.

This will only fracture the dems further. It will separate old blacks from young blacks. This will completely discredit the NAACLP by both blacks and whites.

The Clintons must really be turning the screws pretty hard.

Did I miss something in this list of events?

1. DNC warns FL and other states, “Don’t move up your primaries, or you will lose your delegates at the convention.”

2. FL and some other states move up their primaries in defiance of the DNC.

3. DNC duly announces that such states’ delegates shall NOT be credentialed/ seated.

4. ALL major Dem candidates, including Hillary, agree IN WRITING that the DNC’s decision is binding. They agree further not to campaign in the blacklisted states.

5. Hillary wins in blacklisted states. (She also campaigned in FL, after pledging in writing not to do so.)

6. Now SOMmmmmmmmmme folks are trying to get the overwhelmingly Hillary-supporting delegates from those states seated.

Cui bono? (Pardon my Latin)

That’s right. In Michigan Obama was not listed. Neither was Edwards. Clinton and Dodd and, I think, Kucinich refused to withdraw from the Primary and five others, including Obama did. Even with this reduced candidate population Hillary got about 55% and Uncommitted received 40%, and this is among Dems!

Very true. And those who voted (and those who decided not to vote) were informed that no delegates would be seated from their states. The results are invalid. Now, they could always have a do over in Florida and Michigan, and seat the delegates based upon THAT vote. Then again, that makes too much sense. I wonder if the MSM will ever notice that it is the Dems who create these voting scandals? (Doubtful)
