More Ice Than Ever: Antarctica is playing havoc with the global warming model.
The American Spectator ^ | 2/5/2008 | Patrick J. Michaels

The Washington Post recently ran a shocking above-the-fold article warning us of "Escalating Ice Loss Found in Antarctica." A new paper by Eric Rignot of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory shows a net loss of ice where most scientists thought the opposite would occur.

The Post went full-bore with this one, spreading the article on to an entire interior page. The piece ends by noting that Rajenda Pachauri, head of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is so concerned that he's is personally going down to inspect the situation.

He should. Before he even gets to Antarctica, Pachauri is going to see something even more surprising than Rignot's finding. Despite a warming Southern Ocean, the amount of ice surrounding Antarctica is now at the highest level ever measured for this time of the year, since satellites first began to monitor it almost thirty years ago. This represents a continuation of the record set last winter (our summer).

Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, we can also look at the departure from the average for ice mass in a given month. At present, the coverage of ice surrounding Antarctica is almost exactly two million square miles above where it is historically supposed to be at this time of year. It's farther above normal than it has ever been for any month in climatologic records. Around now, because it's summer down there and the ice is headed towards its annual low point, there should be about seven million square miles of it. That means, as data in University of Illinois' web publication Cryosphere Today shows, that there is nearly 30% more ice down in Antarctica than usual for this time of the year.

Remember, John McCain wants to INCREASE YOUR GAS TAX because of Global Warming.

Somebody post that picture of John with his sign....

I’m going to start an Ice Offset Trading company. For every $100 you send me to assuage your evil ice-generating ways, I’ll put one ice cube in my wife’s drink.

Greenland is beginning to reverse the trend and freeze again, as well.

Increased cold, Increased ice. Sure signs of Global Warming climate change.

Thats definitely evidence of something going on and its important to raise taxes on corporations to either stop it or keep it going.

Not to worry. He'll just get Hollywood types to pull out their iMacs and "fix" the photos.

Then, he'll get Soros to call James Hansen to come up with some numbers.

Who are you going to believe? Algor, or your lying eyes?

It’s not “global warming” anymore. I got the memo... it’s “climate change”.

The global warming Jihotis usually say this is a compensation by mother earth for the global warming, a short term, regional extreme response to cool down the planet; only a temporay blip in our slow meltdown into oblivion.

<sarc Like DUDE . . . the reason there’s so MUCH ice in the water around Antarctica now is because of GLOBAL WARMING. The glaciers are melting and LIKE really LARGE icebergs are breaking off and falling INTO the ocean faster than ever before MAN ! ! ! </sarc

Um are snow pack in Oregon in the Cascades is 500% (around) and in the Coast Range 300% (around) the weather man and official weather center are very worried about flooding and predicting 25 inches of water from melting snow.

Bigger flooding than the last run off in 1996 when ten inches of water was the run off.

How about the rest of ya’lls snow pack and run off estimates.

All of us have been talking about back when we had El Nina and it was like warm San Diego perfect weather all winter long.

Been freezing icey winters and no summers every since then.

30% more ice huh?

According to my Gorean climate-ice-seacoast level formula, done in reverse: that means that water levels should have receded by 30 feet throughout this entire fragile planet, and that the Polar Bear’s habitat will extend into Scotland.

Compare this raw MODIS view on 1/31/2008 with the processed MODIS image from a Larsen B collapse sequence on 1/31/2002.

In the raw 2008 view, move the bars a little below and right of center to see a newly forming Larsen A ! It had collapsed previously and in the 2002 image it shows as open water to the north of the peninsula ( or island chain ) which separates Larsen A from Larsen B ( when they exist. )

The Larsen B embayment has heavy sea ice in the 2008 image, but has not formed into a shelf.

Of course, there's no guarantee that this refreezing trend will continue, but it certainly seems to contradict the prediction of run-away or accelerating melting.
