News From Lake Wobegon Tilts to Obama (Barf Alert!)

ST. PAUL, MN -- Sure, Barack Obama got Maria Shriver's backing at Sunday's big rally with Oprah Winfrey and Stevie Wonder in Los Angeles, adding another Kennedy cousin to his list of endorsers -- and this one the wife of the Republican governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Perhaps Shriver's backing will help a bit in California, where he is locked in a tight Democratic primary contest With New York Sen. Hillary Clinton going into tomorrow's Super Tuesday voting.

But the senator from Illinois, who is working hard to color in the map of the 20-plus states that will hold primaries and caucuses Tuesday, was equally excited about an endorsement he got this weekend from a backer who could do a lot to swing things in Minnesota.

While California's primary will be held Tuesday, so too will Minnesota's Democratic presidential caucuses. Polls suggest that the Illinois senator leads Clinton in the state, and Obama drew a crowd estimated at close to 20,000 Saturday at Minneapolis' Target Center.

When Obama arrived to campaign in Minnesota, he found a letter from Garrison Keillor, whose popular "A Prairie Home Companion" program on public radio is set in a fictional Minnesota town called Lake Wobegon.

"I'm happy to support your candidacy, which is so full of promise for our country," wrote the best-selling author, who has long backed liberal causes and progressive candidates such as the late Paul Wellstone. "Seven years of a failed presidency is a depressing thing, and the country is pressing for a change and looking for someone with clear vision who is determined to break through the rhetorical logjam and find sensible ways to move our country forward. That's you, friend."

Contrasting the Obama opportunity with the George Bush years, Keillor suggested that electing the senator from Illinois as the next president would "bring an end to a long sour chapter in our history."

Carrying on with the comparison, the humorist added that "of course it will be exciting to have a president who can speak with grace and power to the American people."

Obama wasted no time in embracing his new friend from Minnesota, announcing that, "As president, I will wake up every day thinking about how I can help make life better in places like Lake Wobegon all across the country."

And don't think this is the last you've heard of Keillor on the campaign trail. The Obama camp indicates it is well aware that the radio host, who maintained a home in Wisconsin for a time, may be almost as popular in parts of Wisconsin as he is in Minnesota. And when Tuesday's "super" voting is done, there's every reason to believe that the Democratic presidential race will be headed for Wisconsin, where the Feb. 19 primary could be the definitional date on the campaign calendar.

Uh, Dude? Lake Wobegon is MAKE BELIEVE. It really doesn't exist!

Empty suit supporting an imaginary place and time. Heck. The Norwegians in Lake Wobegon wouldn't even allow you to live there, LOL!

Joan Baez bought a new guitar today and piled on, as well.

And if there were someone even further left than Obama, Keillor would be supporting him instead.

Obama captures the Prius vote, the grey haired ponytail vote, the aging hippy vote and the MySpace vote.

I watched about ten minutes of Lake Wobegon several years ago. Two thoughts struck me. The first was how much he disliked the people of that mythical town. Every comment was dripping acid. The second thought was how much of a classic liberal he was. He was all emotion in search of a thought process.

BTW, that's a nasty picture. He looks like he just got off of a three day drunk.

He looks like he should be on a list somewhere. Maybe more than one. People should know his whereabouts.

If I recall correctly, Lake Wobegon is a horrible place. An endorsement from them would be “damning praise.”

But seriously... Garrison Keillor... seems like a nice enough guy, but he’s a big government liberal just like most public radio types. It’s just the way it is.

Anerica's response: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
(same as America's response to Keilor's insufferable show)

I doubt that an endorsement from Garrison Keillor will carry a whole lot of weight. Fewer people have heard of him, than Keith Olberman.

Actually, from the local/national news coverage tonight “The Go-To Girls” (Oprah, Maria, Caroline, etc.) are all carrying Obamas water for him.

Here’s all any Conservative needs to know about Barrack Hussein Obama:

Special Interest Group Ratings:

Planned Parenthood - 100% Support
National Right To Life - 0% Support
NARAL - 100% Support
Americans for Tax Reform - 0% Support
ACLU - 83% Support
NEA - 100% Support
NOW Hags - 100% Support
Citizens Against Government Waste - 13% Support
Gun Owners of America - 0% Support
NRA - “F” Rating
Federation for American Immigration Reform - 0% Support
US Border Patrol - 8% Support
Unions - 82% - 100% Support
Population Connection - 100% Support (These are the ‘Zero Growth’ freaks)

http://vote-smart.org/issue_rating_category.php?can_id=BS030017

[Barrack Hussein Obama’s record in the Illinois senate:]

- Opposed the Defense of Marriage Act; would work to repeal it in the U.S. Senate; would not vote for any legislation that would restrict the ability of gays and lesbians to marry.
- Opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act four times in Illinois. A similar bill passed the U.S. Senate 98-0. The Born Alive bill would have prohibited a baby from being born alive but left to die according to the mother’s wishes. Obama inexplicably opposed this bill not once, twice, or three times, but four times.
- Obama took almost $90,000 in bundled contributions from the Council for a Livable World. The council is a well-known anti-defense organization.
- Obama puts rigid ideology before what’s best for the people of Illinois, and presumably he would do that as President as well. He has on several occasions made public his opposition to the NAFTA trade agreement and his belief that it must be negotiated. All the while thanks to NAFTA, Illinois exports $1.3 billion in agricultural goods to Canada.
- Obama refused to vote for a bill in the Illinois State Senate that would have increased penalties for drug traffickers.
- Obama voted against a bill that would have delivered the death penalty to gang members who murder first responders.
- Finally, just in case you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Obama was the only member of the Illinois State Senate to vote against a bill that prohibited early release for sexual predators.

Can’t kill the innocent fast enough, can’t free the guilty soon enough!

Keillor is way past his sell-by date, even in the frozen north.

“The first was how much he disliked the people of that mythical town.”

That always struck me, too. Granted, Midwesterners are known for our self-deprecating humor, but it’s not funny when someone else points out our foibles.

It’s like...I can complain all day about my Husband, but if YOU say one word against him, you’re toast! ;)

Unlike most big libs, Keillor is a harmless goof. Still it makes me smile to think of all the panderingly sweet things he’d be saying about Hillary now if it weren’t for Obama.

I enjoy much of the program, but Keillor has injected his politics into the show more and more as he has grown older.

Years ago I used to listen to Keillor's show. He was a bit liberal but now he's gone off the deep end.

I used to find his radio show and the skits entertaining.
