Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow, predicts more winter ahead

If you believe in folklore, bundle up for six more weeks of wintry weather.

This is Groundhog Day, and the furry little critter known as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning. That, according to tradition, means six more weeks of winter.

The apathetic-looking rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle. They are the local businessmen in the Western Pennsylvania town who carry out the February 2nd ritual while garbed in top hats and tuxedos.

The ceremony was preceded by a boisterous celebration attended by thousands of cold, but happy people, including a few couples who used the occasion to get engaged.

Why didn't this Punxsutawney Phil feller run for POTUS.

Seems he has all the qualifications, and Lord knows the campaigns are in need some intelligence, honesty, and charisma.

Maybe you are just reliving it over and over and you don’t know how to stop it?

Country-Style Groundhog

1 groundhog
1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 c. cooking oil
1/2 tsp. sugar

Clean and skin as soon as possible. Remove all sent glands. Cut off head, feet and tail. Cure in cool place by suspending from hook approximately 4 days.

When ready to cook, lard according to recipe.

Dress groundhog as you would a rabbit, removing the small sacs in the back and under the forearm. Soak groundhog overnight in salted water to remove wild flavor.

Combine flour, salt and pepper; rub into groundhog pieces. Brown grounhog in hot oil in skillet; sprinkle with sugar. Reduce heat and add 1/2 cup water. Cover and simmer for about 30 minutes or until tender. Remove cover and cook for 10 minutes longer.

We have a burgeoning controversy. According to Chuckles the groundhog in Manchester, CT there will be an early spring because he did not see his shadow this morning.

Of course the global warming nuts blame this on global warming as well. It’s a nice position to have when any result proves your theory correct.

First D.J.: Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your booties ‘cause it’s cooooold out there today.
Second D.J.: It’s coooold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?
First D.J.: Not hardly. And you know, you can expect hazardous travel later today with that, you know, that, uh, that blizzard thing.
Second D.J.: [mockingly] That blizzard - thing. That blizzard - thing. Oh, well, here’s the report! The National Weather Service is calling for a “big blizzard thing!”
First D.J.: Yessss, they are. But you know, there’s another reason why today is especially exciting.
Second D.J.: Especially cold!
First D.J.: Especially cold, okay, but the big question on everybody’s lips...
Second D.J.: - On their chapped lips...
First D.J.: - On their chapped lips, right: Do ya think Phil is gonna come out and see his shadow?
Second D.J.: Punxsutawney Phil!
First D.J.: Thats right, woodchuck-chuckers - it’s
[in unison]
First D.J.: GROUNDHOG DAY!
Second D.J.: GROUNDHOG DAY!

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life.

Yet standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and asking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.”- Phil Connors.

This has been an even more miserable winter than usual.

Here, too. This is my fifth winter here and I've never seen such sustained chilly weather. And ofcourse, we had snow for the first time in the locals' memories last month.

Yes, somehow they will spin it that way. Did ya hear the one about the snow in a China desert? NO, not a joke.

AW C'mon LLS! Think about what you are saying! Between a groundhog named Chuckles and another named Phil which one would you take seriously? ;O)
