Snow-covered Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang Autonomous District of China on Jan. 19. National Weather Observatory located in the middle of the desert announced that it had the record snowfall in recent five years which started the day before. [Luntai(Xinjiang Autonomous District, China) = Xinhua/Newsis]

If I remember correctly from the National Geographic article on Marco Polo, “Taklamakan” translates more or less as “Go in and you don’t come out.”

The sand covered in snow reminded me of the comment one of my sons made when he played on a beach for the first time at around age 4, “It’s like hot snow!”
