Ashamed to have ever believed in Duncan Hunter

Ladies and gentleman, today I my heart sank...  My jaw dropped....  And my mind screamed!!!

I think blood shot out of my left eyeball as I opened my email this evening and I found this message from Chuck Winn, Florida Chief of Staff, Hunter for President  - who if you recall is the guy who provided respones for my campaign interview with Duncan Hunter's campaign.  Well here is he message and some of you may have recieved the same, I couldn't believe it either:

Washington, D.C. - - - Congressman Duncan Hunter, who withdrew his candidacy for the Republican Presidential nomination on January 19, 2007 , today endorsed Mike Huckabee.
 
"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America's industrial base." 
 
"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement.  Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity.  I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed.  The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well.  My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.

The guy we (THAT I) was calling a "real" conservative Endorses a guy who I consider more LIBERAL than Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter combined?!  What is going on?

Maybe Congressman Hunter thinks his "electoral luck" will rub off on Huckabee???  No, I think not, I think many of us have been severely let down.  I guess you never can tell.  This is absolutely puzzling!!??!?!??!!

If you don’t like and can’t support Mike...so be it, but don’t be a fool and vote for Romney. Also, understand that Hunter may be just as good a man as you all said he was from the get go. He might just know things you don’t.

You keep posting that - so tell us what it is that Hunter knew to make him support Huckabee, but is such a big secret that nobody else in the country knows. I'd think - if there were such a thing - the Huckabee campaign would be letting everyone know. (After, of course, saying that it couldn't be shown because it wasn't right...)

Hunter is a supporter of the fair tax, although not to the extant that Huckabee is. He couldn’t support McCain because of the immigration issue, and he dislikes the free-tradeism of Rudy and Romney, he would also never support Rudy on account of abortion. That’s why he picked the Huck.

First, that was not meant as a criticism, only as a possible explanation for a strange move by Hunter. Sometimes it takes someone of a similar background to see the real person behind the rhetoric.

Second, I have been against voting for Romney, and against him for the very reason he was a Mormon. As I posted many times, I was going to vote for Thompson. I am more interested in and supportive of Mormonism than I am of Romney, and I didn’t like that he became a lightening rod for bringing out all the anti-Mormonism. I can do with out that. I would much prefer a Methodist Romney, for example. Or I would prefer him being a vp, as another example. The problems in this country are too important to have anti-Mormonism complicating the issues. And I am sure the anti-Mormons won’t leave it alone for the sake of the country.

If I ever posted in support of Romney, it was not because I was planning to vote for him, but because I thought he (at times) was being falsely accused. And he was often falsely accused. People seem to feel a need to exaggerate and distort as a means of expressing deep feelings. And when they do that, I feel a need to call them on it.

So now it looks like he may become the nominee. If that is the case, I will support him and try to fight off the anti-Mormonis. I don’t think he will ever use his position to promote Mormonism. If he does, I will BLAST him for it. I want the issue dropped.

So I reject your implication.

I adhor Momonism too... so what...

But if it helps, I adhor those the gave money to planned parenthood too.

IMHO... Duncan made the only choise left him.

We now have only one candidate left... Mitt Romney. He ... is far better than .... Dhimmicrats. To sit this one out is to vote for .... higher taxes, another Dhimmicratic appointment to the SCOTUS, and a weak national defense!

Your logic is the exact same logic I used to decide on Romney, only I did it eight months ago.

Not that I am psychic, but I could see that Fred just didn't have the motivation to REALLY run for POTUS.

Duncan Hunter (God love him) had the best record but was obviously too stone-faced and dour-looking for the American public to warm up to.

McCain is unstable, and he subconsciously and secretly hates the religious right for choosing GWB over him in 2000.

Uber-Christian Mike Huckabee scares the pants off me - even though I am a devout Baptist who tithes, goes to church, and 'thumps' my Bible all the time.

Secular Republicans, Jewish Republicans, and ALL moderates or Independents would understandably RUN from Huckabee in droves for fear of a Theocracy in the White House.

Guiliani? I'm not even sure WHY he is a registered Republican, quite frankly.

Which brings me back to Mitt Romney, who is a fabulous public speaker. A true intellect. Wholesome as all get-out. And a conservative in his heart to boot.

Yes, Romney made some dumb statements in the past. But in reality he pushed the conservative message and cause, if anyone bothers to check.

Your circular logic is almost too clever.

If Hunter had been polling better, then perhaps he would not want his “name” to be a rallying cry when he dropped out.

But in reality, he only had 2-3% support consistently, whether in lib Northeastern states or heavily conservative Western states.

I know many on FR don’t want to believe it, but there are other factors which enter a person’s mind when choosing a candidate, other than “Is he the MOST conservative?”

Republicans ALSO want an affable, likable candidate — one they can relate to.

One they think understands their personal situation, even though that’s impossible.

Duncan would make a GREAT Sec.Defense .... but he was a lousy Presidential candidate.

It means your decision on who to vote for is not based on their stances on issues or their qualities, but their religion. At least you are both honest enough to admit your bias so we see the reaons behind your being behind Huckabee. Perhaps Hunter had the same bias, but is being PC and won't admit it.

My respect for Hunter has taken a nosedive. I was sorry he had left the race, but now I wonder if he was ever the man I thought he was.

But Huckabee's policies as governor weren't any better than McCain's. They were just less publicized and he wasn't in bed with Ted Kennedy. (not a pretty picture, I know!)

But unlike a lot of the moronic imbeciles on FR I'm confident that, like me, you have second and third choices lined up. And you didn't participate in all the absurd smearing of candidates subsequently requiring the inevitable consumption of crow when things don't quite work out.

Having said that, I'll stay home if it's McCain. I'll flip a coin (whether I stay home) if it's the Huckster.

Oh, I’ll fully admit that Hunter lacked the charisma to be elected, that was my one fear for him from day one; I was hoping he’d find a way to connect with voters on a more personal level, but it never happened.
