GEORGE WILL: McCain's ‘Maverick' Is Dems ‘Mainstream'
The Washington Post ^ | 1/20/08 | George Will

In 2004, one of John McCain's closest associates, John Weaver, spoke to John Kerry about the possibility of McCain running as Kerry's vice presidential running mate.

In "No Excuses," Bob Shrum's memoir of his role in numerous presidential campaigns, including Kerry's, Shrum writes that Weaver assured Kerry that "McCain was serious about the possibility of teaming up with him," and Kerry approached McCain. He, however, was more serious about seeking the 2008 Republican nomination.

But was it unreasonable for Kerry to think McCain might be comfortable on a Democratic ticket? Not really.

In ABC's New Hampshire debate, McCain said: "Why shouldn't we be able to reimport drugs from Canada?" A conservative's answer is:

That amounts to importing Canada's price controls, a large step toward a system in which some medicines would be inexpensive but many others — new pain-relieving, life-extending pharmaceuticals — would be unavailable. Setting drug prices by government fiat rather than market forces ... (snip)

There are decent, intelligent people who believe that equity or efficiency or both are often served by government setting prices. In America, such people are called Democrats.

Because McCain is a "maverick" — the media encomium reserved for Republicans who reject important Republican principles — he would be a conciliatory president. He has indeed worked with Ted Kennedy on immigration reform, with Russ Feingold on restricting political speech (McCain-Feingold) and with Kennedy and John Edwards — a trial lawyer drawn to an enlargement of opportunities for litigation — on the "patients' bill of rights."

(snip)

In the New Hampshire debate, McCain asserted that corruption is the reason drugs currently cannot be reimported from Canada. The reason is "the power of the pharmaceutical companies." When Mitt Romney interjected, "Don't turn the pharmaceutical companies into the big bad guys," McCain replied, "Well, they are."

We know this guy through and through. Even George Will gets it! He is more a Democrat than a Republican. Rush's own Paul Shanklin has it right with the parody song, "If you don't know me by now ..."

Republicans, this is NOT who we want as our nominee!

Ugh! Does McCain have ANY fiscally conservative plans or positions? Any?

Yeah, but type in Huckabee and Clinton and the search will result in lots of pics of those two cooperating.

Looks like a counter punch to the recent Joseph Farah posting.

I kid, I kid, have a great weekend.

The Republican like the Democrats are no different it is about the Presidency and to hell with being a Conservative, moderate or Democrat. One thing I have learned for sure is how stupid and uniformed Americans really are. When the election comes these same imbeciles will be holding hands, hugging each other and telling the country how united they are. America has become one big stage with actors and not a leader among them so I say bring on the ticket of Hillary and Obama unless the wizard of Oz fools one of them into taking Edwards but I suspect to seal the black vote it will be Hillary and Obama and maybe Edwards Attorney General.

McCain's positions are defined solely by that which favors his electoral hopes most.

McCain is the ultimate opportunist, no more firmly grounded in principle than Bill Clinton (or any other Democrat).

I don’t always agree with Will, but he justifiably nailed McCain to the democrat outhouse door with this offering. Fortunately it was the inside of the door, so John can appreciate the wafting smell of the policies he seems to endorse all too often.

The War Secrets Sen. John McCain Hides

But there was one subject that was off-limits, a subject the Arizona senator almost never brings up and has never been open about -- his long-time opposition to releasing documents and information about American prisoners of war in Vietnam and the missing in action who have still not been accounted for. Since McCain himself, a downed Navy pilot, was a prisoner in Hanoi for 5 1/2 years, his staunch resistance to laying open the POW/MIA records has baffled colleagues and others who have followed his career. Critics say his anti-disclosure campaign, in close cooperation with the Pentagon and the intelligence community, has been successful. Literally thousands of documents that would otherwise have been declassified long ago have been legislated into secrecy.

None that I can think of. McCain is out for McCain except when it comes to amnesty for illegal aliens. He supports admitting terrorists and gang members. He is dangerous for this country. His health is also a problem. TV showed Cindy helping him down the stairs from the airplane and then he walked along similar to Tim Conway on “The Carrol Burnett Show.”

McCain is wobbly on his feet and looks sickly. His mental state is of concern also. McCain is not electable.

The headline for one.

I’ll take an 82 lifetime ACU rating over Hillary’s 9 or Obama’s 8.

Did you read the article? McCain wants to impose price controls on the pharmaceutical industry because they are “bad guys”. George Will says that there are people of good will who believe that, but very few of them happen to be Republicans. Is that something you dispute?

McCain is the worst liar running for office. He has a track record of lies longer than Cintoon did when bubba ran for office. McCain's speeches sound like bedtime fairy tales for the grandkids. He thinks conservatives will forgive and forget his treasonous voting record?

The reason dems like McPain is that they dont know a liar when they see one /and/or like liars best since they are malleable and can be addapted to the socialist narrative pronto.

He is not a maverick. He is not a conservative.

I just haven’t figured out what he is; but whatever he is; he is not good for America.
