Sharpton Blasts ‘John’ Huckabee Over Confederate Flag Remarks
Political Wire:Fox News ^ | January 18, 2008 | Staff

The Rev. Al Sharpton released a statement Friday chastising one “John Huckabee” for saying South Carolina should be able to decide whether it wants to fly the Confederate flag.

Of course he meant Mike Huckabee — the GOP candidate who on the campaign trail Thursday said outsiders should not tell South Carolina what to do when it comes to that flag.

Either way, as the controversy of race settles on the Democratic side, Sharpton said Republican Huckabee is now offending the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“In the midst of a national celebration of the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. around his birthday, and right before the South Carolina primary John Huckabee has sought to divide this country between Blacks and whites, and north and south by implicitly supporting South Carolina’s right to fly the Confederate flag over its state capitol,” he said. “Mr. Huckabee’s position is a direct slap at Dr. King and all that he fought for.

All righty, I’ll chime in on this because I think I’ve managed to get in before it becomes a rehash of the War of Northern Aggression.

The Confederate Battle Flag does not belong above the dome of the state capitol. I have no problem with it flying over a Confederate memorial on the capitol grounds, where it is a historical symbol in its historical context. That is precisely the compromise struck a few years ago, and everyone seems fine with it until someone tries to stir the s—t every couple years.

I don’t live or vote in South Carolina, and I believe that is their choice. So my opinion is worth every penny it cost you.

I have to assume any compromise would be voted upon and made into law in order to enforce it.
Was it made into law? if so, it's not quite that simple to stir it up.
If not, then there really was never a compromise in that any agreement had no way of being enforced.

IMHO, As long as the Confederate flag is not flown above Ol' Glory, It isn't none of my business where South Carolinians (or any other) care to fly it.

Dixie has proved more than faithful, with the blood of her sons in the balance. More power to her.

Voted by the legislature or ordered by the governor; it would depend on the specifics of the state constitution. I don't know SC law in that much detail.

Was it made into law? if so, it's not quite that simple to stir it up.

Oh, sure it is. "Made into law" does not end the argument. If you will, allow me to offer some word pairs; Scott/Sanford. Plessy/Ferguson. Brown/Board. Lemon.Kurtzman. Roe/Wade.

Not only is it fairly easy to fight the law, but for Americans, it's habitual. It;s part of our national DNA. Fighting the law is how we came to exist, and fighting unjust laws is how we survive, And thrive.

Somebody please ask why Clinton didn't order SC to remove the flag while they had the presidency for 8 years.

Oh, what do you mean the president can't do that? Then why does it come up every 4 years?

Please explain to the S. Carolinians that the Dems, no matter who is elected, will remove their flag and dictate to them what is a proper flag to fly.

Why would anybody vote Dem in SC if they want to decide the flag to fly, and if not, why don't they remove it themselves? It just seems odd they have Democrats in the state, yet fight over the flag issue every 4 years. Is Hillary going to send troops down to remove it? That would be some must see TV. Why is it always a Republican problem that we don't care what a state does on it's flagpoles, and if we did, we still don't have the power to do anything about it? I could just see the gubmint telling Texas their flag should be an illegal alien crossing the river on a blue background. It makes no sense to be arguing over these things with Muslims wanting to cut our throats and other more pressing problems.

This has actually never been a racial issue. The Confederate flag only became a cause celebre when Political Correctness (ie: Socialism) began becoming established in the U.S. The PC peeps (Socialists) hate the presence of any potent symbol of rebellion -- or even disagreement -- with the State.

Many years ago I was a big shot UAW goomba. If I ever made a mistake of mispronouncing a "brother's" name, I'd immediately get blasted with, "We all look alike to you white boys." That wasn't the reason for swinging back to the "right" side, but it sure helped me make the decision.

All us white boys must look alike to the convicted liar.

Does the confederate flag offend some people? My answer to them is....”suck it up, you little baby”. I’m offended when I go to the movies and blacks from the inner city disturb my enjoyment by being loud and rude, I’m offended when I go to the store and see a black dude with his pants down to his knees, I’m offended when I’m sitting in a restaurant and blacks start swearing around kids.....

Ah, the flag nonsense again. If the people of SC want to fly a Confederate flag, that is up to them. The Constitution does not say anything about flags, so therefore it is the domain of the several states. When I think SC, I think a little palm silhouette on a field of red, but that’s just me.

If we got rid of every flag that offended someone or that had evil done under it, there would be no more flags to fly. Maybe a white one, but isn’t that the one many have been flying all along?

I’m offended by people on the left with too much time on their hands, that they can worry about and be an activist for things best left alone.

”suck it up, you little baby”.

An attitude needed by 100% of the American public. Instead, there are maybe 30% with the attitude that we are busy enough that we only have time for our own business, not getting into everyone else’s. How much simpler things would be, and the time saved would be bigger than Everest.

Unfortunately, it would literally put lawyers TV News, and newpaper people out of business.

One of the silver linings of Barach Obama is these people will be severly marginalized if he win’s. The statement that America is a racist nation can no longer be stated with a straight face.

Let us pray that he dose not destroy the nation for that silver lining.

It might not be a racial issue for white South Carolinians, but I assure you bkack citizens see it that way. Not because of anything having to do with the Civil War; directly; the objections to the uae of the flag are rooted in the 1950s, not the 1860s.

Glad to hear it. Here in Georgia, we took the CBF off the state flag a few years back; most of us don't want to revisit the issue. There is a small hard core of folks whose most important issue is bringing back the 1956 state flag -- those are the people Neal Boortz calls "flaggots."

True dat, I have an opinion, but not a vote. And it is colossally irrelevant to a presidential election. You might as well ask a president what he thinks about the proposed new traffic light at the corner of state and main; it's a local issue he has nothing to do with.

He had much bigger fish to fry. If he'd lived into the 1970s and beyond, he might have had a word or two to say. It's one thing to complain about some dipwad waving a flag -- when said dipwad is kicking your ass, what flag he's flying is not the most urgent concern.

Has Al Sharpton ever apologized for his race-baiting for Tawana Brawley.

Tawana Brawley is an African American woman, who in 1987 at age 15
received national media attention in the US for perpetrating a hoax
by accusing six white men, some of them police officers,
in Wappingers Falls, New York of rape.

NAACP, Dems etc...

That's the problem, they are like the proverbial camel's nose in the tent.

So whose side are you on in that case?

Excuse me, Huckster might be a sorry Populist but he's hardly as indecent a character as Al Sharpton who shoulda gone to jail just over Brawley but didn't for obvious PC reasons (he won't ever go to jail for anything short of dog fighting..lol)

btw...Abbeville Imposter...you are not even from South Carolina as you admitted on another thread so pray tell what do you really know?

Sharpton has NEVER apologized for the duplicitous, laecenous manner in which he perpetuated a hoax against the people of New York along with two other principals in the infamous affair known as the Tawana Brawley caper, Brawley being quite an apt name, as this entire event was a giant brawl from beginning to end.

At the very least, the two other participants had achieved some modicum of status and accomplishment in their lives as attorneys, both virulent anti-white lawyers who'd accuse David Dinkins, the city's first black municipal care-taker, otherwise known by his official title, Mayor Dinkins, of wearing too many Yarmulkahs (Jewish skull caps)during his mayoralty as a gesture of respect when visiting the city's Jewish neighborhoods. Both were stripped of their law licenses as a consequence but the only thing Sharpton had that could have been stripped was his underwear and not much more.

He was the same obnoxious, self promoting pompous street hustler he is today except for wearing the gym clothing/ sneakers get-up as the costume of his trade.

Sharpton could never, would never, apologize, not the least of which is because of the irony that it was the Tawana Brawley farce that catapulted him into the public eye, in the belief that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Dear Tawana, the story goes, converted to Islam, changed her name and relocated somewhere down South, location unknown to the public.

But the legend of con-man, drug dealer, street hustler, FBI informant, charlatan, Black Shlepper
(Shlepper-Yiddish for low life/hobo) Candidate for the Presidency of the United States lives on in ignominious, sewer-dwelling fashion popping his head up out through the metal grid of the sewer drains to stir up the turmoil he is so very good at doing but not much else.
