Council reviews 'just treatment' for immigrants

A pending City Council resolution has placed Evanston in the forefront of the national debate on illegal immigration.

The proposed law, which calls for "humane and just treatment for immigrants and their families," was introduced at the Human Services Committee's Jan. 7 meeting.

The resolution would prevent the Evanston Police Department from investigating individuals solely based on their immigration status, said Ald. Edmund Moran (6th), who was instrumental in the drafting of the resolution. It also calls for the state and federal governments to act on the issue.

"We're disappointed with Congress' failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform," Moran said.

After voting unanimously to hold the proposal in favor, the committee postponed official action on the issue until its Feb. 18 meeting.

Ald. Lionel Jean-Baptiste (2nd) suggested holding the issue in committee so a more diverse spectrum of immigrant communities could voice their concerns.

Moran began working on the issue last year. He met with a group of citizens that collected similar resolutions passed by other municipalities, and decided the Cook County resolution most closely represented Evanston's interests.

They rewrote parts of the document to effectively communicate their message before presenting it to the committee.

Although the council cannot act on the issue until the Human Services Committee recommends that the resolution be adopted, several critics spoke during the citizen comment portion of the council's Jan. 14 meeting.

Illegal immigrants cost Illinois taxpayers $3.5 billion per year in services, mostly in public education, according to a study cited by Rosanna Pulido, field representative for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, who attended the meeting.

FAIR is a nonprofit, special-interest group that aims "to improve border security, to stop illegal immigration, and to promote immigration levels consistent with the national interest," according to its Web site.

The resolution proposed is a joke! Believe me, it was writen by illegal aliens and their sympathizers! If the City of Evanston would put out this kind of work, they obviously do not know what they are doing!!

They know exactly what they’re doing. The only reason Evanston is not known as a Bolshevik college town such as Ann Arbor or Madison is because its larger neighbor to the south sucks up its oxygen.

What the article Does not tell you is that the pro-illegal alien lobby sat behind closed doors with the councilmen for months designing this. It just became public in January.

What part of the existing law don't they understand. These nitwits should be rounded up and deported with all the illegals.

Just treatment under the law would have the law breakers sent back where they came from.

This has nothing to do with justice...it's about a bunch of weezely mouthed liberals and their abettors, supporters, and those depenedent on them (spelled "votes bought and paid for") balkanizing America.

While illegal immigrants should be equal before the law, they do not have to be *treated* equally.

Speaking in practical terms, illegals that are well-behaved, successful, integrating and are generally acting like good citizens, should be treated respectfully and with an eye to a *reasonable* process by which they can become legal citizens.

The process by which people become US citizens is ridiculous in several ways. Especially to people who have been living here for many years. It is not acceptable to break up families, ruin established businesses, cost people their homes and vehicles, and otherwise severely punish them *because we will accept them as citizens*. That is, though they are already integrated, they are forced to leave the US and go to a now foreign country (to them), and waste perhaps 20 years just to get back in. We as a nation *want them*, so why abuse the heck out of them?

*However*, that being said, illegals that are criminal, poor and with no inclination for self-improvement, not integrated and with no inclination to integrate, and generally acting like foreigners here to abuse and exploit our society and its people, should be *not* just be expelled from the United States, but “barred from reentry”.

(To clarify, being deported from the US is just being kicked out, but if an illegal enters the US after being “barred from reentry”, it is a serious felony crime worth many years in prison.)

It is appropriate and intelligent to accept as citizens people we want as citizens, without making the process onerous and abusive. But it is also appropriate and intelligent to keep out individuals who will be a drain and a burden to society and our people.

While a single solution, either “kick them all out” or “let them all stay”, appeals to those who crave easy answers to complex problems; it is not terribly challenging to change the equation by using two solutions, instead of just one.

The bottom line is that we as a society get what we want, and don’t get what we don’t want; but at the same time do not abuse good people who are already proving that they are good people, as good or better than the rest of us.

What one expects from a town run by liberals. The city is way behind in its pension obligations and is staging a referendum in which Council members hope the town’s numerous deadbeats will come out and vote to compel property owners to raise the real estate transfer tax. Rather than seek ways to pare the bloated city budget/bureaucracy, the city’s political leadership wastes time and energy pandering to illegal immigrants, hoping that they will be rewarded by the votes of hyphenated Americans and, voter fraud being a real possibility in a town where the citizenship question cannot be asked, the votes of not a few illegals as well. And RINO alderman Moran’s clueless assertion aside—he’s the the sole “Republican” on the Council—the prime suspect in the town’s most recent homicide is an “immigrant.”

The city has one man working, one man sitting on his as*, and one politician, an election is held and the vote is two to one and the one man working is supporting three people.

I love democracy!!
