The driver of a dark sport utility vehicle smashed into a gate outside Davis Monthan Air Force Base near South Swan Road Monday night, an official said.
The SUV sustained front-end damage and the driver fled after ramming into the fence about 8:30 p.m. outside the entrance to the base at South Swan Road, said Tech Sgt. James Fisher, a base spokesman.
The gate was damaged and will have to be replaced, but the SUV wasn't able to smash through it, he said. "I don't think it was their intention to enter" the base, Fisher said.
The Swan gate is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. After that another fence is closed to create a buffer zone that keeps intruders from getting into the base, Fisher said. The motorist crashed into a gate in the outer fence, he said.
The Tucson Police Department is assisting base officials with the investigation.
The headline is messed up. It should have read “SUV slams into gate...”
Will keep an eye.
Either a rogue SUV, a Muslim terrorist, an illegal immigrant, or a crazed peacenik.
Or maybe somebody who got drunk, smashed up his car, and ran off to get something more to drink.
Rogue SUV trying to make off with valuable vintage B-52 parts...
A guy in my area got drunk and rolled his truck (IIRC a new Ford F150). He staggered home to sleep it off.
The cops found the vehicle the next day and contacted him. He tried to claim he was carjacked. He wasn’t drunk anymore at the time the police visited him, but he was still stupid!
How’d this guy “run away”?
If he drove a VW Beetle would the have said "Beetle Driver"?

Reminds me of the time a pickup with camper full of people blew past the gate at Walker AFB NM way back in 1966 or ‘67.
They made it to the flight line where the nuclear armed B-52s were parked before they were stopped.
It was a load of ...(trumpets and flourishes please)...ILLEGAL ALIENS who got lost.
*snicker*
This reminds me of a private in my company on Ft. Huachuca. He liked the green stuff (not money) way too much.
His second bust was because he was pulling Turkish smokehouse inside his car while driving with friends in Tucson. He pulled up to the D-M’s gate and rolled down the window.
I still wonder what the expression on the face of that SP was like.
That would be "AP" there Popeye.

(Laughing heartily) The Swan gate is near the northwest corner of the base. The Bufs were cut up on the east end. The dude is pretty lucky to have escaped across Golf Links road, on foot, without getting smeared.
Funny, I thought AF had SP (Security Patrol) and the AF did something else. Oh well, ya learn somethin’ new every day.

They did have APs(Air Police). We called them APES. Then they changed it to SPs.
