Fears of terror attack in Germany

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- Lebanese authorities have warned of terrorist attacks being planned on targets within Germany, prompting the Justice Ministry in Berlin to increase its security measures, authorities said Saturday.

"There was a tip from Lebanon -- a warning tip," said Stefanie Amft, a spokeswoman for German federal police.

She said that the threat was related to the worldwide terrorism threat, but would not give further details.

"It is known that Germany is part of this worldwide threat," she said.

The comments come after two magazines, Focus and Der Spiegel, reported that the German Embassy in Beirut had received a phone call earlier this month threatening attacks on German military or judicial targets.

Following the threat, Lebanese authorities on Friday arrested a Syrian al Qaeda suspect identified only as "Mohammed N.," Focus magazine reported.

The suspect allegedly said a German-Turk, a Saudi and an Australian were already in Germany planning an attack on Berlin's Justice Ministry or other such agencies in order to avenge the prosecution of al Qaeda suspects in Germany, Focus reported, without citing sources. The report said explosives for the plot were already within Germany.

Well why in heaven’ name should they? Bush has assured them as he has all of us, that Islam is the Religion of Peace. This must be some sort of lie put out to discredit Bush’s vaunted credibility in these matters.

Yeah, they’ll pass legislation strengthening penalties against “hate speech” against Islam.

I can’t think of anything more helpful in our fight against the global Islamic jihad then Germany and/or France being attacked by the jihadis.

European nations have been facing and fighting terror cells on their soil for decades...

As for their police forces taking notice, just ask Carlos, Action Directe, Khaled Kelkal or the Rote Armee Fraktion.

So far germanies authorities have quite a brilliant track record on denieing attacks. We got more specialists and more cops in the streets.

If american authorities where organzied like the germans maybe 9-11 wouldn’t have happened.

Noone here lives in fear and our authorities representants are regularly invited to the US - so you guys learn a bit.

I can not help it but this is idiocy. Regards from Germany.

BTW - How would it be if we hope for terrorist attacks in the USA? I do not want to have "friends" like this. The funny thing is that the Jihadis like espechially us Germans since we are the ones that were responsible for the Holocaust (Yeah this view of history is really sick - I know - but in regarding of the Muslums it is the plain truth). It might sound strange, but most of those dumb Islamists see Germany as their ally (Germany is of course no ally of Islamists - but we are speaking of their crazy view of things). In effect the most likely target of Jihadis on German soil are US-installations like Ramstein or Landstuhl and no particular German ones. Of course we do anything to defend your bases, but after your assessment (that terror acts should happen in Germany and France) I have to say that a terror act there would be basically your very own problem.

I think the Germans should immediately retreat, pay some ransom, and leave with their two ships off the coast of Lebanon. It’s good for them, it lets the whole world know what they are and they can stop playing the pretend game of doing something, and we can stop pretending as if we ever expected them to do anything. I don't like pretend games.

Actually, in the Cold War you had bombs going off frequently.

You are not the primary target because you are insignificant in the eyes of the radical Jihadist or Communists (Which still exist). You are not even the primary target, although you were the primary political instrument, of Balkan groups that are a threat. You're not a target of Abu Sayeff, or of N. Korean terrorists. You don't need to worry about some Columbian narco group, they know you're not going to do anything and never have, so they don't target you. We not only are a higher priority target, we are also on the hit list for more and different groups. Furthermore we are much more exposed, because more Americans are abroad in total numbers, more trade is conducted, and we have a much larger diplomatic and security footprint in places that are not completely stable.

You’re a low end secondary target that will be hit more as a target of opportunity, but are not the target that the bad guys throw their resources against. Your span is regional, ours is global, your capabilities compared to ours are meager. You don't have the intelligence community, you don't have the security organizations nor the military capabilities. You lack the strategic assets cross the board and frankly you're actually amatures that simply have an easy time today because no one is really targeting you right now. Within your small Germany the BND, BfV, BKA were in fact largely built and modeled after our organizations post WWII; only they are much smaller, with much less reach, and technically much less capable.

How many of these warnings have we had, though? After a while, people do stop paying attention.

What you say is kind of true.

It is exactly like the Cold War. Our installations are indeed a high tier target for many of these groups, but the Germans are not liked by the Islamist.

Your religion is incompatible with Islam. Your view of women is incompatible with Islam. Your use of alcohol, the exposure of women on billboards and TV, your concept of freedom of speech etc. all do not jive with the Islamic school of thought.

They take Germans hostage, they kill German hostages, and they have done so in the past on several occasions. From hostages in Lebanon to Iraq, to hijacked Lufthansa planes flown to Mogadishu, you are “reinventing” history to fit your paradigm.

• You’re not the ones fighting the Islamists in the Philippines.
• You’re not the ones who pressured Libya and bombed them several times.
• You’re not the ones pressuring Iran and who bombed them.
• You not in Iraq.
• You’re not doing much reference Lebanon.
• You don’t do anything in support of the Multi-national Forces Sinai.
• You don’t really do anything in the Gulf ensuring the water ways stay open.
• You’re a lesser player in Afghanistan when it comes to combat operations.
• You’re not doing anything in Pakistan.
• You’re not in the Republic of Georgia.
• You’re not the ones pressuring Syria.
• You don’t back Israel the way we are.

Where do you stand in the pecking order for them? Bellow France or even Spain and Italy. But that does not make you a “friend” of the Islamist. They hate you, and they stand against what your Constitution stands for, your laws say, and your culture teaches as right and wrong. Their religion is mutually exclusive with any other religion. They will blow up Buddhist shrines just because they are not Islamic as the Taliban did. You are approaching this like the typical secular European. You think if you leave them alone they will leave you alone and that you’re no target; you’re wrong. Ask Pim Fortyn, Van Gogh, Rushdie, the paper printing Mohammed cartoons, the “disenfranchised youths” in French suburbs…………

Unless you can accept to bow down and abandon free speech, Constitutional rights guaranteed to women, etc etc etc, you will eventually run into more problems. Most of the radical groups today are simply tied up in a fight with us, a few others, and Isreal, with you standing on the sidelines giving “grosse Ratschlaege” and seeing yourself as victims in some way.
