MEXICO CITY - A shootout between Mexican authorities and suspected criminals just across the border from Texas left three people dead and eight injured on Monday, officials said.

Gunfire broke out around noon when Mexican federal agents encountered a group of people carrying assault weapons in a car in the town of Rio Bravo, across the border from Donna, Texas, according to a joint statement from Mexico's federal Attorney General's office, Defense Department and Public Safety Department.

Three suspected criminals died and five soldiers and three federal police officers were injured in the shootout, which took place in Tamaulipas state, the statement said.

The shooting was drug-related and some of the bodies were still lying in the street hours after the incident, Mexican media reported.

Tamaulipas state, on the border with Texas, has been plagued by drug-related killings and is the home base for the Gulf cartel.

I know some folks who still have relatives in Mexico (mostly in the interior) and they are worried about the safety of their relatives. Stories of armed bands of thugs roaming the countryside and these shootouts are becoming more and more common.

Well, the thug drug dealers would be smarter to come over here illegally and do it, because our government throws our agents in jail if they attempt to interfere with their “business”.

Accrding to the aforementioned folks, the drug gangs already have taken effective control over chunks of the countryside and several towns. The cops are either too scared to fight the drug gangs or are paid to do nothing about them.

My best friend and her husband retired to Mexico 2 years ago, to a small town outside of Cuernavaca. She keeps saying come on down it’s very safe, there are guards everywhere. She doesn’t understand the irony of what she is saying.
