Romney wins Wyoming Republican caucus

CODY, Wyoming (Reuters) - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the Wyoming Republican presidential caucus on Saturday, taking seven of the state's 12 delegates with nearly all precincts reporting, according to a state party official.

Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee won two delegates and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California won one, said Amy Larimer, executive director of the Wyoming Republican Party.

Larimer said two delegates remained undecided while officials counted all the votes. A final tally was expected later in the day.

The victory gives Romney supporters something to tout as the focus of the U.S. presidential election shifts to Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. Romney suffered a setback earlier this week in the Iowa caucuses where former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee soundly beat him.

In past election years, Wyoming has been largely ignored by many candidates because it has the lowest population of any U.S. state with roughly 520,000 residents, but this year state Republican leaders sought to attract attention by setting an early date for delegate voting.

Tom Sansonetti, a Republican organizer, said the move has paid off.

"Wyoming is getting a chance to elect the first delegates in the United States," he said, noting that Iowa actually chooses its national convention delegates in April, not with last week's caucuses.

Some candidates made brief appearances in Wyoming this past year, with Hunter being the last to visit in early December. Romney visited the state twice and opened a campaign office.

Romney now leads in GOP convention delegates. Including Iowa's delegates, which is selected at a state convention, Romney leads Huck 26 to 20.

Romney officially in the lead!!!!!!!!

Thank you to all the Hunter supporters in Wyoming for getting Duncan on the scoreboard.

Don't give up, folks. Vote your conscience and support conservatives if you want a conservative in the White House.

A vote for Hominy or the Huckster is a vote for legalizing the crime of illegal immigrants, more crime, and higher taxes. Don’t say you haven’t been warned!

How Wyoming has voted on Presidents in the past

1972 Nixon
1976 Ford (notice No CARTER vote there)
1980 Reagan
1984 Reagan
1988 GH Bush
1992 GH Bush (NO BUBBA CLINTON)
1996 Bob Dole
2000 Bush/Cheney

Good For Romney. He needs a win in between his two first in the nation losses to keep him going.
All the candidates need to spread around the delegates fairly evenly. Even Ron Paul got a couple in Iowa and will get several in New Hampsire (coming in 3rd above Huckabee.)

Everything is right on target for a brokered convention early September, where Fred Thompson will emerge the surprise consensus nominee. Until then the Democrat nominee will be taking fire from all the GOP candidates who will be auditioning for the lead role, while the Democrat won’t have a clear opponent to target.

Go Mitt!
Go Mike!
Go Fred!
Go Rudy!
Go John!
Go Ron!
Go Duncan!

Let’s swarm the Democrats and run circles around them so they never even knew what hit them.

No - Fred only got 2.

(cue everyone saying how Wyoming isn’t representative of the party - and how we’ve got to wait for Florida and California to decide this)

Do you really think that people who actually got more delegates than Thompson (which right now - and as of NH and Florida, will be Mitt McHuckliani) will just roll over and say “Oh, well, let’s just give it to Fred!”?

Please.

Sorry, but I don't think Fred would become a "consensus nominee." He doesn't have enough dynamism and charisma to win many more people. I have a dream in which the deadlocked convention listens to a speech by Hunter and stampedes to him, but realistically, that won't happen either. Probably there will be backroom deals in which some of the leaders drop out in return for big policy concessions (or VP or Cabinet jobs) from the remaining one(s).
