Before Huckabee, a word from the sponsor . . . by Christi Parsons and John Chase

WEST DES MOINES--They came to hear Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee speak, but first the crowd of hundreds had to sit through a soft-sell pitch on the wonders of multi-level marketing.

For half an hour, two businessmen paced the stage where Huckabee would soon stump. They never said the name of the company during their talks, but afterward some members of the crowd shared with others the good news of a company called Quixtar Inc.

Quixtar is a sibling company of multi-level marketing giant Amway – and, according to Huckabee's public schedule, the host of the event.

I would have gotten up and left. If the Huckster was ever elected I suppose we can expect to see the Lincoln Bedroom up for rent - again!

I would have got up and left the speakers and Mike Huckabee there to speak to themselves.

Rude.

"We were just there as citizens of Iowa, wanting to talk about what makes our country and Iowa great," said Waechter, a business owner with Quixtar. "I don't think people were misled . . . Some people left saying they liked everything about it. They enjoyed it, every part of it."

I like going to see Barnum's circus, too.

This is a new tactic. In the old days, they would invite you over for dinner then ‘show you the plan.’

I think Huck overestimates the extent of his personal charisma. Hopefully, it will be his undoing.

Amway sales people have progressed so far from trying to make eye contact with strangers in public restrooms.

What a coincidence. My son was approached by a well dressed young man over the weekend hawking quixtar. He presented it as an outlet to buy things one normally purchases through Walmart. However, while reading the literature, I noticed it was brand specific - brands I’d never heard of before. Has anyone heard of or had experience with quixtar?

I live in Grand Rapids MI and this is the home of Amway.

Nothing like having to hear a product pitch before hearing the Huckster speak. The owner of Amway ran for Governor this past year and he got throttled by Jenny Granholm. He is an idiot on stage and you can tell he has a real knack for telling people how things are going to operate in his company but has no clue on how to debate any person face to face if he cannot fire him. I would not be a bit surprised if Dick DeVos was behind the rally as a major sponsor.

I think Huck overestimates the extent of his personal charisma. Hopefully, it will be his undoing.

Thats exactly how I think about him. He really troubles me. Just something phoney about him.

He realizes the power of his mouth and using religion have taken him far. Too far, that smart mouth and smooth delivery is being scrutinized by many, and no longer appreciated.

It is almost like he is laughing at the fools who buy his slickness.

Oh my, what other dope from Hope does that remind you of?

Amway people are notorious liars. You can ask them directly “Is this Amway?” and they will lie in order to keep that info from you. Later, they will claim it was for your benefit.

I had a friend that got mixed up in this crowd. Tried to get me to join too, but I wouldn't because my basic understanding of economics told me it was all crap. In order to produce revenue, you have to sell either a product or a service. When I asked the guy point blank what product or service was being sold, I got a non-descript "it's not like that" answer.

Well, yeah, it is, actually. My friend eventually got out when he couldn't turn the kind of revenue he wanted.

Sadly, I see a number of my brothers and sisters in the church involved in this Quixtar scam. I don't know why that is, and I'd hope that they had a good enough understanding of basic economics to recognize this as a semi-scam.

To be fair, it's not as bad as most scams. They don't end up cleaning out your bank account or steal your identity, but I still find the whole thing highly deceptive in its nature.

What more needs to be said?

Somehow, I’m not surprised that the Huckster is the ‘Man from AMWAY.’
