Former governor Mitt Romney's economic development agency granted initial approval to a tax-exempt bond last year for a Planned Parenthood clinic in Worcester that will provide abortions, just two months before he left office and began highlighting his antiabortion position as a presidential candidate.
...
Romney repeatedly used the power of his office while governor to advance socially conservative positions, including restricting stem cell research, pushing abstinence-only sex education in schools, and vetoing a bill to increase access to emergency contraception in hospitals.
...
"Mitt Romney is prolife," Fehrnstrom said. "He did not know about this loan. It was made by an agency that does not report to the governor. If it did, he would have told them not to do it."
...
In a statement to the Globe, Kimball said that it was his policy not to brief the governor's office on initial approval of loans.
"I did not brief the Governor's office on these initial reviews," he said.

They list several conservative positions he took as Governor, all of which made the Boston Globe VERY MAD at him and willing to do anything to stop him.
In this story, they found a development loan which was started 2 months before Romney left office. They admit he knew nothing about it, but use his name prominently throughout the article so the unsuspecting reader will be confused and think Romney actually approved something the Globe knows he would have opposed had he known about it.
They even provide the direct evidence that the commission specifically avoided telling Romney about this issue.
Anyway, it's nice to see liberals attacking, and helpful that they managed to tell the truth about Romney's support for social conservative positions during his Governorship.
Spin.. spin.. spin..
You really like Mitt don’t you ...
Why the barf alert?
Such a coincidence: this same topic was posted within minutes over at DU, also.
Romney loves the Culture of Death. His record shows he supports it every chance he gets. U.S. Army Retired |
Is there any evidence that Romney ever paid attention to what was going on in his administration?
What kind of a leader is that?!?
Ever few days there's a new story about shenanigans from the Romney administration that Mitt claims to have no clue about. He has a very poor record of choosing subordinates and keeping them in line.
Romney’s past + Youtube = The truth .
Pay attention to who is the reporter CharlesWayneCT?
Both Frank Philips and Ken Maguire are pro SS and SSM reporters!
To some this is a No no to make note or point out that the messenger might have an ax to grind
I think this comment explains what there’s a barf alert on this “news story” on FreeRepublic.
The people at DU love stories like this, it’s about their mentality. In saner times, those at FR would laugh at liberal newspaper articles like this. But in these particular times some so-called conservative freepers will show up and defend this article.
The Boston Globe really has it in for Romney — they must be very scared he’ll beat the rat nominee. Makes him more attractive, all the time.
Thank you for clarification, not that it will do much good around here. They have preconceived notions and if an angel told them otherwise, they would spit in the angel’s face. Nice try, though. Go, Mitt!
Romney loves the “culture of death”? What on earth. He was a pro life governor. This makes no sense.
You have to be joking... Romney: Still Supports Embryo Research -Romney Approves of Abortion Pill and Supports the Legalization of RU-486 and forced Catholic hospitals into providing morning after pills TOTALLY TRAMPLING ON THE CATHOLIC CHURCH'S RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF RELIGION. The rest of his record is well documented, AND IT IS DOWNRIGHT DISGUSTING AND EVIL. |
You discovered one of the tricks the liberal media uses to smear good conservatives. It is “his agency” because he was the governor. Just as every agency was “his agency”.
Of course, this decision would eventually reach the Governor’s desk. But by the time this one did, Romney was no longer the Governor. As the article grudgingly admitted, when these types of things reached Romney, he took socially conservative positions, and would have stopped this loan.
The agency knew this, and as they say, they kept this information from his office until after he was gone.
According to the referenced article, Romney “ veto[d] a bill to increase access to emergency contraception in hospitals.”.
Romney opposes government funding for embryonic stem cell research.
He will not ban it, and neither will any other viable candidate. Nor would congress approve a ban.
The “abortion” pill is a pill which primarily is used to prevent pregnancy, like any other contraceptive. I believe it can also abort a fertilized egg, but there is controversy on that point, with some scientific articles saying it simply doesn’t work that way.
The morning-after pill should not be confused with RU-486, a true abortion pill. Not saying you did, but others might looking just at the name you gave it. “Abortion pill” is the name for RU-486, not the morning-after pill.
To me, it seems like a truthful article about Romney’s record. He’s a liberal, plain and simple. No matter how hard you try to hide it, you cannot.
The worst possible inference you could draw from this article, and it would not be correct, is that the last two months of office, when it was clear the democrats were taking over and Romney was already preparing his presidential run, he may not have been as keen on attending to details as he was earlier.
And the reason I say it would not be correct is the article clearly states that the person who made the decision specifically did NOT tell Romney about it, and by the time it would cross the Governor’s desk, he was no longer the Governor.
But what makes the story “false” is that throughout the story, KNOWING that Romney was never told about this, the story ties Romney’s name to the loan as IF he had something to do with it, when the author KNOWS he didn’t even know about it.
And the author even acknowledges that his sole purpose for tying Romney to it is because it will cause trouble for him in the Presidential campaign.
When a reporter puts things in a news article that he knows are false inferences, and does so specifically to impact a candidate for office, that isn’t journalism, it’s mudslinging partisanship.
Further, those supposed conservatives who took this story and asserted that it showed Romney SUPPORTED this loan had to ignore the facts that were presented and substitute their own reality, one they made up to justify their hatred for one of our conservative candidates.
As to your claim that he is a “liberal”, you can certainly believe what you want, but the facts belie your assertions.
List ANY set of “conservative” principles and positions you care about, and I’ll show you that on every one, Mitt Romney is largely on your side on those issues.
He’s pro-life, supports strict constructionist judges, believes the 2nd amendment is an individual right, that it exists to protect our liberty. He supports the 1st amendment and will work to repeal McCain/Feingold’s CFR that Thompson worked so hard to pass.
He supports the Human Life Amendment. He opposes gay marriage and civil unions, supports DOMA and a Marriage amendment.
He supports Bush’s tax cuts, free trade, tax reform. He supports private accounts for Social Security. He supports the war in Iraq and wants to stay until we win. He understands that the war on terrorism is in part a war on islamofascism, and that we need to strengthen our military to defeat them — he wants 100,000 new troops.
He wants to streamline government and cut spending. He supports private business solutions to the health care crises, and opposes government insurance solutions.
He opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants. He wants to secure the border, to implement better tracking of legal immigrants, to crack down on employers of illegals. His position earned him the endorsement of Tom Tancredo.
OK, what issue of yours did I miss? There’s more to talk about, but I tried to cover all the main issues that people talk about here. Tell me your top three issues that I missed, and I’ll explain how Mitt Romney is espousing the conservative values we all profess to care about when we aren’t bashing our conservative candidates.
