McCain proposes new welfare program
Spero News ^ | December 23, 2007 | Pat Toomey

Posted on 12/26/2007 10:33:07 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

In his latest attack on the free market and what appears to be a calculated political move to appeal to Michigan voters, John McCain wants to create a new welfare program for manufacturing workers.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Senator McCain announced yesterday a plan to use federal dollars to make up the salary difference for workers who lose manufacturing jobs and are forced to accept lower-paying jobs until they find new careers.

This is exactly the kind of plan you expect to hear from the Democratic candidates, not an alleged economic conservative, The government should not be in the business of guaranteeing wages. In a dynamic economy, wage and employment changes are inevitable and part of the normal process of economic growth and technological innovation.

In addition, McCain’s welfare program has the potential to unleash a series of perverse incentives, the worst of which is the disincentive to learn new skills and assume challenging new career paths. Why make an effort to learn new skills and take on a challenge when John McCain will make taxpayers pay your former wage for even a minimum wage job? The program also has the potential to be exorbitantly expensive as many workers opt to settle for low-paying jobs so long as McCain doles out taxpayer subsidies.

This is the latest evidence that John McCain doesn’t appreciate the normal dynamics of a healthy economy and lacks confidence in the ability of workers to forge a successful new career without government handouts.

I used to think McCain was a smart guy, but damn. This is an auction he can’t possibly win. The Democrats will always match whatever he does, plus a pony.

Oh, good grief. We’re in the middle of an entitlement crisis, which is pouring money into foreign hands and literally threatening America’s future.

And McCain proposes a new entitlement program. /shaking head

Just when I start considering revising my opinion of McCain, and think he might not be a COMPLETE disaster as President he manages to come up with crap like this.

Thank God he always manages to remind us of his irrationality before we can vote in a primary.

I'm not supporting this program. But I checked out the Detroit Free Press article, and there is a minor but somewhat significant difference in what he proposed and what it says here that he proposed. From The Detroit Free Press:
Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Thursday that he would use federal money to make up the salary differences for workers who lose manufacturing jobs and take lower-paying positions while they train for new careers.
...
"If someone has to work at McDonald's, I will compensate them for the loss of income for some period of time," McCain said. "We need to compensate them for the difference as an incentive to stay in the workforce."
Note he says "while they train", whereas this article says "until they find new careers", a statement I can't find anywhere in the article. McCain specifically says it's a temporary thing, and that he'd pay for it using training money.

I disagree with him -- training money should be used for training, not to push people into low-wage jobs just so they still "have jobs".

The article notes that Romney has a plan that involves providing existing retraining funds:

But he has laid out his own plan that would use existing federal retraining dollars to set up accounts for displaced workers to use for a variety of training opportunities.
In other words, Romney is saying take the money being wasted on government-run training programs that aren't working, and set up private accounts for workers to use to choose their selection of training from private and public sources.

McCain seems to want to take those federal training dollars and pay people to work at McDonalds for a while.

What’s a “federal dollar”?
Is it like a real dollar that the Government takes from me through income taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, liquor taxes cigarette taxes, phone taxes, utility taxes, investment taxes, property taxes, Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes and the myriad of “fees” that our idiot politicians think up in the dead of night?
Just asking...

McPain’s new tax plan associated with the “Pay the Difference” plan, “How much did you make? Send it in. The government knows just what you need and will provide it “free of charge”. No more worries. Uncle Sam has morphed into Pappa Sam.

Another socialist program designed to get McCain votes and take money I’ve earned for my family to give to others.
Sort of like Mrs. Clinton saying we’re going to take more of you money away from you to use as we see fit for other purposes.
Way to go RINO John McCain. Go the hell back to Arizona and climb back under your rock.
