(Los Angeles) -- Will Smith may be upset with some Web gossip sites. But the Jewish Defense League is hot with him over the comments he made in a Scottish newspaper about Adolf Hitler.
The JDL rips into Smith in a release posted on its Web site on Christmas Eve. After quoting Smith's comments, the group says what the actor says is "ignorant, detestable and offensive."
It goes on to say that Smith's words "spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis" and "stick a knife in the backs of every veteran" who fought against the Nazi regime.
The statement goes on to add that Smith saying what he says "is like a Jew saying that James Earl Ray...was basically a good person who did a 'bad thing'." It doesn't stop with the written tongue-lashing.
The JDL is calling for movie theaters to stop showing Smith's film "I Am Legend," for the public to boycott it and for Hollywood executives to cancel Smith's future projects.
Also on Christmas Eve, Smith issued a statement saying his comments were misconstrued by the Web sites. It's unclear whether the JDL position will change in view of the actor's defense of his statements.
Too bad the JDL didn’t read what Smith actually said, and went for the cheap publicity stunt instead. Knee-jerk crap like this doesn’t help their image.
There’s something missing from this story . . . I can’t put my finger on it . . . wait a minute . . . what did Smith say?
Yes, I was looking for that information too. A little hard to evaluate without those facts.
So what did he say?
I’m Jewish. I’m pretty sensitive about hidden anti-Semitism. What Smith said was absolutely not objectionable in any way. He was using Hitler as an example of the worst possible evil, and he didn’t even say there might have been good in even Hitler: he only said that Hitler saw himself as doing good, and that, I think, is exactly true. I am ashamed that the JDL would react in this way.
Even Hitler didnt wake up going, Let me do the most evil thing I can do today. I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was good, Smith says. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.
Yes, Hitler believed in what he was doing. Nazis believed in what they were doing. If the quote is accurate, although Will is saying it is not, I don’t find any problem with it. It doesn’t sound like he was saying Hitler is a wonderful person.
End of the year they need donations. If someone was a supporter of the North Vietnamese Communist and protested by spiting of American Military personnel I consider them just as evil as Hitler and Stalin.
The JDL was part of the lawsuit to remove their Jewish scripture, the Ten Commandments, from the courthouse in Alabama.
Will Smith’s quote was right on, but the MSM is twisting his words to make it look like he’s a Nazi sympathizer.
Oh no, not again, please not this stuff again. They are trying to Imus or Kramer this man.

Allow me to translate:
“Ah yes, If we could have only reprogrammed those
“engrams” Hitler had, we could have “cleared” him and
he would have been a great leader.”
They are always upset about something, anything. Mostly that they are Jewish.
Judging strictly by body count, Stalin and Mao were more evil than Hitler.
So do liberals.
What’s the “reprogramming”, Smith is talking about, supposed to mean? Would Hitler have been “reprogammed” he would have been a good guy? The comments are not particulary offensive, but rather weird. Is Smith talking some Scientology mumbo jumbo or does he think Hitler was some sort of robot?
Smith should’ve known that we are in the PC age where one has to parse every word before uttering it.
Celebrity rule #1: NEVER talk about hitler. You are bound to say something dumb.
