Russia test-fires intercontinental missile Mon Dec 17, 1:31 AM ET

Russia successfully conducted a test launch on Monday of a new intercontinental ballistic missile, the navy said.

A statement said the missile was launched from the Tula nuclear powered submarine in the Barents Sea in the Arctic and hit a designated area in the Kura testing ground on the Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia's Pacific coast.

"The launch was conducted from an underwater position as a part of training to test the readiness of the marine strategic nuclear forces," the statement said.

A navy spokesman would not say what type of missile was tested. Itar-Tass news agency said the Tula submarine carried Sineva missiles commissioned by a decree from President Vladimir Putin in July.

Missile tests have become regular occurrences in the Russian armed forces in the past few years. They are viewed by Russia's political and military leadership as evidence that they are reviving the country's military might.

How many do they have, four? I seem to see alot of these “displays of might” on the history channel nowadays. Seems most of them were a load of crap. Their economy is the size of Belgium and Luxembourg’s combined. Terrifying. They trade less with Europe than we do with the Dominican Republic. Its a show folks, just like a circus, all to keep Pooty-Poot in power.

Heh. I searched on “Buck Turgeson” and got a bunch of matches ( 352 ) and I was satisfied. Of course the correct “Buck Turgidson” gets 57,000 matches.

General Turgidson, I find this very difficult to understand. I was under the impression that I was the only one in authority to order the use of nuclear weapons.
That's right, sir, you are the only person authorized to do so. And although I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it's beginning to look like, uh, General Ripper exceeded his authority.

I was thinking of this part, “But it is necessary now to make a choice, to choose between two admittedly regrettable, but nevertheless *distinguishable*, postwar environments: one where you got twenty million people killed, and the other where you got a hundred and fifty million people killed.”

Well, hell! We’ve got a sunny day scenario here, Mr. President!

"You're talking about mass murder, General, not war!"

Stanley Kubrick wasn't a complete incompetent on film-making. Now, if they could just do a similar film on Islamic Terrorism...

Not all of them. The interceptor missiles are to deter the likes of rogue states launching a small number of missiles. No interceptor missile force can destroy an ICBM/SLBM arsenal that Russia fields. In the case of Russia/US going nuclear then its the MAD scenario. No winners!
