Eye-Opening Facts
Congressional Research Service, ^

Posted on 12/16/2007 9:42:49 AM PST by Rockaway Republican

A former military friend of mine sent this info. I retrieved the attached report.

Yet another glaring example of the devious, malicious ways that the media and a good deal of our so-called leaders mislead the American public; and we get what we deserve, because we let them get away with doing so on a continuous basis. TD

These are some rather eye-opening facts: Since the start of the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, the sacrifice has been enormous. In the time period from the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 through now, we have lost over 3000 military personnel to enemy action and accidents. As tragic as the loss of any member of the US Armed Forces is, consider the following statistics: The annual fatalities of military members while actively serving in the armed forces from 1980 through 2006:

1980 .......... 2,392 1981 ......... 2,380 1984 .......... 1,999 1988 .......... 1,819 1989 .......... 1,636 1990 ......... 1,508 1991 .......... 1,787 1992 .......... 1,293 1993 .......... 1,213 1994 .......... 1,075 1995 ...........2,465 1996 ......... 2,318 1997 .......... 817 1998 ......... 2,252 1999 .......... 1,984 Clinton years @14,000 deaths 2000 .......... 1,983 2001 .......... 890 2002 .......... 1,007 2003 .......... 1,410 2004 .......... 1,887 2005 ....... . 919 2006.......... 920 Bush yrs. @ 9016 deaths

If you are confused when you look at these figures...so was I.

Do these figures mean that the loss from the two latest conflicts in the Middle East are LESS than the loss of military personnel during Mr. Clinton 's presidency; when America wasn't even involved in a war? And, I was even more confused; when I read that in 1980, during the reign of President (Nobel Peace Prize) Jimmy Carter, there were 2,392 US military fatalities!

These figures indicate that many of our Media & Politicians will pick and choose. They present only those "facts" which suport their agenda-driven reporting. Why do so many of them march in lock-step to twist the truth. Where do so many of them get their marching-orders for their agenda?

Our Mainstream Print and TV media, and many Politicians like to slant; that these brave men and women, who are losing their lives in Iraq, are mostly minorities! Wrong AGAIN--- just one more media lie! The latest census, of Americans, shows the following distribution of American citizens, by Race:

European descent (White) ...... 69.12%

Hispanic ............................... 12.5%

Black.................................... 12.3%

Asian ..................................... 3.7%

Native American .................... . 1.0%

Other ..................................... 2.6%

Now... here are the fatalities by Race; over the past three years in Iraqi Freedom:

European descent (white) ..... 74.31%

Hispanic ..............................10.74%

Black ................................... 9.67%

Asian ................................ .. 1.81%

Native American .................... 1.09%

Other ................................... .. .33%

You do the Math! These figures don't lie... but, Media-liars figure...and they sway public opinion! (These statistics are published by Congressional Research Service, and they may be confirmed by anyone at: http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL32492.pdf )

Now ask yourself these two questions: "Why does the mainstream Print and TV Media never print statistics like these?" and "Why do the mainstream media hate the web as much as they do?"

IMHO I think this fits in well with your thread as a reminder of just what the media is.

FROM: Giap’s Memoirs (Gen. Giap was a very famous and knowledgeable General in the North Vietnamese Army.)

General Vo Nguyen Giap.

General Giap was a brilliant, highly respected leader of the North Vietnam military. The following quote is from his memoirs currently found in the Vietnam war memorial in Hanoi:

“What we still don’t understand is why you Americans stopped the bombing of Hanoi. You had us on the ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder, just for another day or two, we were ready to surrender! It was the same at the battles of TET. You defeated us! We knew it, and we thought you knew it. But we were elated to notice your media w as de finitely helping us. They were causing more disruption in America than we could in the battlefields. We were ready to surrender. You had won!”

General Giap has published his memoirs and confirmed what most Americans knew. The Vietnam war was not lost in Vietnam — it was lost at home. The exact same slippery slope, sponsored by the US media, is currently well underway. It exposes the enormous power of a biased media to cut out the heart and will of the American public.

A truism worthy of note: Do not fear the enemy, for they can take only your life. Fear the media far more, for they will destroy your honor.

It seems the same thing is happening with the battle for Iraq.

The news media in general has a liberal agenda, and what they print is the means to an end, ie, a more liberal government.
I would guess that the media would hate any source of news that differs from their biased opinions.

Do you happen to know how many people were in the military each of those years?

Without that number, the number of deaths can provide no relevant statistical data.

Re: “Uncle Billy” Sherman. “If nominated I will not run, if elected, I will not serve.” His picture should be included with Grant’s on our $50 bill.

Well, the figures on minority fatalities certainly are relevant.

watched the beginning of CNN's "Week At War" just now. No report on retaking an Afghan city from the Taliban. In fact they led with the claim Iraq is going badly because of one car bombing incident on Tuesday. The second story was us losing the terror war in Algeria. And on and on.

While the overall makeup of the forces by race is relevant the lack of it does not make these numbers irrelevant.

i was not speaking about the statstistics by race but rather the number of total military deaths by year. In that data you need the denominator in order to provide clarity and relevancy to the statistic.

Three astronauts died during the Apollo missions but 12 have died during Shuttle missions. Since there are 7 times the astronauts now than there were then, the Shuttle is a much safer launch vehicle????

The report these numbers comes from can be found here:

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL32492.pdf

If you look it over, you’ll get an idea of why the numbers are they way they are.

For example, in 1980, when the report starts, there are a total of 2392 fatalities. This includes deaths from accidents (1556), deaths from homocide (174), deaths from illness (419), suicides (231), hostile action (none), and terrorist attack (1). Also, at that time, the active duty strength was a little over 2 million.

In comparison, in 2006, total deaths were 1858. This includes deaths from accidents (465), deaths from homocide (30), deaths from illness (205), suicides (155), and hostile action (753), with another 250 not yet determined. Also, at the time, the active duty strength was a little under 1.4 million.

If you go to link http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL32492.pdf ) on page 10 are the numbers you requested. Though a somewhat higher number of personal in 1980’s. They remain fairly steady from the 1990 to present. 1996= 1,661,310 / 2006= 1,664,014
