The Philadelphia Commission of Human Relations will hold a public hearing Friday to address a controversial sign at the popular Geno's Steaks that has gained national attention.
The hearing was scheduled after allegations were made accusing Geno's Steaks of discrimination for posting a sign that reads: "This is America. When ordering please speak English."
Geno's owner Joey Vento said it is freedom of speech.
"Since we have a little problem in the country with the language, it is also telling people at Geno's Steaks, all we speak is English," Vento said.
Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) does not see it that way and alleges Geno's is in violation of the Philadelphia Fair Practices Ordinance. Chapter 9 Section 9-1105 (A) (1) (b) of The Philadelphia Code.

Are there enough lamp posts in that city to accommodate all of these vile officials?
This was posted before but I still hope he shoves this up their noses. GOOD FOR HIM IT’S TOO BAD MORE PEOPLE DON’T DO THIS. IMHO
“Philadelphia is run by Dorks! ... Go Cowboys! ... (runs a hides)”
You don’t have to hide...being a die hard (and often) Eagles fan I can tell you that the Eagles D won’t be able to find you anyway.
;)
Does Philly’s 911 system use enhanced Babelfish?
“..so, what kind of English is wit, dit and dat? (Sorry Joey, I couldn’t resist)”
That’s how you have to order over at Pat’s across the street. “Wit onions” or “witout”
;)
If the sign is written in English, nobody who doesn’t understand it can complain. All those who can read it are capable of complying with the requirement - if they want a sandwich.
Pat’s, Joeys, I think I started something here... oops...
At least not this year. Good one!
There is one, and only one, ubiquitous sign that SHOULD be in Spanish as well as English: “Express lane. Ten items only.”
It drives me nuts when somebody gets in the express lane with 75 items and says “no habla engles” when challanged about it.
“Pats, Joeys, I think I started something here... oops...”
Yeah, now I’m hungry for a good Philly cheese steak. I grew up in the Philly burbs and live in Maryland now...I miss a good cheese steak (that I don’t have to make myself).
You can’t find a goody Philly down here. Frankly, south of St. Lewis the Philly’s just aren’t the same.
They can understand and speak English well enough when they want something. It’s when they don’t want to comply that the language barrier comes up.
Quite obviously, they have too much time on their hands.
Take the sign down, and when someone orders in a language other than English, bring them something gross like raw snails. That’ll fix it.
Just another attempt to eliminate White members of society.
Last time I was in Philly I made it a point to hit Geno’s just because of this bullshit.
