Officials in Stamford, Conn., are struggling with how to handle what appears to be a military hoax, after a mysterious woman phoned a local volunteer fire department announcing that her son had died while serving in Iraq.
The Glenbrook Volunteer Fire Department received the call on Nov. 29 from a tearful woman claiming to be the mother of a former volunteer, who said, "Gabe is dead."
The fire department unfurled its mourning bunting and identified the man as Gabriel Costello, making an announcement on its Internet system that the U.S. Ranger had died serving in Iraq. The news soon spread, first to an online scanner site, ScanCT.com, and then the media.
But there was one problem.

I heard this story. I got all depressed, so I called one of those Lifeline numbers. I ended up talking to a Call Center in Pakistan. I told them I was depressed and was thinking about committing suicide. They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck!
Not really, just trying to shed some humor on a bad situation.

One of the guys I work with came to work Monday and calmly announced that his son had been killed in Baghdad the evening before - he got the word from his other son who was in the AO at the time. To make it worse, if that is possible, he was on his way home after finishing a tour.
Hearing that was like taking a roundhouse shot to the gut. I was so glad/blessed/drained when my son made it home after his two tours, and now to see a bud loose one of his sons - it is beyond words......
I cannot imagine the kind of human excrement that would/will pull a stunt like this.....

In the world of the left, this is not unusual, back in my youth the commie trash used to send us, Viet Nam Times, cards hoping that we got dead. We used to send this trash to MI.
If you have followed the antiwar movement it is a repeat of 1968.

I don't know when you were across the pond but I do remember a member of my Squad, in late November of '67, kind of spazed, remember the green and red tracers coming in and out, a jolly Christmas.
He received a bunch of Christmas cards from the now 40 year olds from his home town, wishing us a Merry Chistmas, and the I hope you die from their parents. Very strange!

"If you have followed the antiwar movement it is a repeat of 1968." That which we tolerated, is being repeated..
The real crime of the era, is that we didn't "address" the bastards of the period with "extreme prejudice"..
Some people simply deserve having their brain housing groups "adjusted or busted", but we've become too freaking civilized to take care of business...
It may yet become an unavoidable task, if we're to save what's left of the Republic.

I agree with your assessment. I did a radio interview at the last GOE. The interviewer asked, "What was your greatest regret since you returned from Viet Nam?
I told him that I have been kicking my ass for forty years that I did not stand up to these people then.
