Witherspoon: Graham is too liberal for South Carolina
The Beaufort Gazette ^ | December 4, 2007 | Tim Donnelly

Posted on 12/06/2007 5:00:08 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

The movement to replace Sen. Lindsey Graham with a fiercer opponent of illegal immigration gained strength on Monday when Columbia native Buddy Witherspoon brought his campaign for the Republican nomination to Hilton Head Island.

Witherspoon is a dentist and three-time elector in the electoral college and a representative at the Republican National Committee since 1996. He espouses traditionally conservative positions against abortion, gay marriage, gun control and higher taxes.

But the key issue of the campaign -- and one that has many in South Carolina looking for a replacement for Graham -- is immigration. Opponents accuse Graham and other senators of wanting to provide amnesty for undocumented immigrants. Witherspoon announced his bid two weeks ago and is setting out to prove he's more committed to routing out the illegal immigration problem.

"I feel like Lindsey Graham is too liberal for South Carolina and no longer represents mainstream South Carolinians," Witherspoon told a crowd of about 55 people at the First Monday Republican lunch club at Aunt Chilada's Easy Street Cafe.

Good. They must all be voted out of office.

Wow, that's not exactly a high bar to clear.

This is a very positive development for the security of this country. Hopefully Witherspoon will gain support, Lindsay Graham will be replaced, and any other pubs having thoughts of supporting amnesty again will get a shot fired over their bow. I like it.

By next June Lindsey will be a leader in the immigration enforcement crowd. It will be very difficult to unseat him.

“By next June Lindsey will be a leader in the immigration enforcement crowd.”

A while back, he labeled border security supporters as “bigots.” That sort of remark isn’t forgotten easily.

I don’t defend Graham but he said “We will tell the bigots to shut up”. He didnt call all border security supporters bigots. In truth, there are some bigot Mexican haters out there. Graham was on the wrong track as far as I was concerned but he may have time to correct his faux pas.

Lispy will be tough to unseat, as he's taken a wide stance on the issues.

That's what happens when one is in DC too long.

TERM LIMITS....same term limit as the President has. 8 yrs for house and senate...then you've got the lefty bureaucrats in government positions...term limits for them...8 yrs and they can then go and work in the private sector...[it was these lefties that wrote the NIE report]

Only by resigning. He's toast, and should be considered as such.

I despise him so much, that if by some miracle he got the Pubbie nomination, I'd tell my friends in SC to vote for the Rat, just to get rid of Goober.

That’s not a bad idea, although 12 yrs. would be more practical.

Also, would term-limit supporters also support term-limits for government employees?

There have been some excellent congressmen and senators who have served for long periods of time. I think of Henry Hyde, for instance.

When you have a really good congressman, you have a real gem who deserves reelection.

I don’t think the problem is term limits. I think the problem is ignorant voters and corrupt or stupid politicians with pretty hairdos. Lindsay Graham is Lindsay Graham, and that's the basic problem. I’d love to see the last of him. But there are others in congress who I hope can stay on.

Yes, it is worth a try. My family (very Republican)has discussed this, and we all have decided to vote against Graham, even if that means voting for a Dem. At least we would know what we were getting.

As much as it pains me to say this I am ashamed that I assisted Sen. Graham get elected. I have already pledged my support to Mr.Witherspoon to correct this mistake. I will also if necessary vote for a Dem. not only would we know what we are getting but at least the press wouldn’t be able to trot out another useful idiot. Nobody expects anything else from a Dem.

The bureaucrats are actually what’s running state, cia etc. So what’s the answer to rid our government of these far left ideologies embedded in government jobs...TERM LIMITS...

HA...if the President has 8 years why not all these others that have turned in to monarchs? What’s fair for the president is just as fair for the crumby senators and house members on both sides of the aisle. No one gets to build a kingdom any longer [and you know as well as I do...that these old timers have done just that]. They go into DC with a small net worth...they leave very very wealthy people.
