The horrible tragedy at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb. received a lot of attention Wednesday and Thursday. It should have. Eight people were killed, and five were wounded.
A Google news search using the phrase "Omaha Mall Shooting" finds an incredible 2,794 news stories worldwide for the last day. From India and Taiwan to Britain and Austria, there are probably few people in the world who havent heard about this tragedy.
But despite the massive news coverage, none of the media coverage, at least by 10 a.m. Thursday, mentioned this central fact: Yet another attack occurred in a gun-free zone.

No wonder, as the bill being debated would have allowed permitted guns to be carried on school property. It is quite a coincidence that he attacked the Columbine High School the very day the legislature was scheduled to vote on the bill..."
Well, the gun-free zone almost worked...
law abiding gun permitters make this world a safer place. I feel safer knowing they are around me.
Well, it’s a good thing it was a gun-free-zone, or even more people may have gotten hurt. (sarc alert)
Just because the press has failed to take notice of the fact that this mall was a "gun-free zone," don't think the shooter missed those signs.
Will people ever get wise to the fact that we have set up every public school in the country as places to go to massacre people at will with no fear of being stopped prematurely?
Does anyone have any details about the firearm that was used?
And look at how many students were left at Virginia Tech after the shooting was over.

SKS.
Fires the same 7.62x39mm AKM/AK-47 cartridge, but it’s a carbine of limited, fixed magazine capacity (10 rounds). You have to reload through the open action, rather than replace the magazine like the AK.
Fun gun for $150-$200.
So carry a gun in the mall anyway. How would anybody know unless you shoot someone?
it was described on a local radio station as an AK-74 assault rifle.
The original interviews with the family and the cops stated that an SKS rifle was used, but this morning the Omaha Po-Lice Chief has spun it into an AK-47 and now CNN, and all the media are having a frenzy.
CNN is now reporting that he used an AK-47 with SKS 7.66 ammunition. No that is not a typo. Check it out.
My take on this is that if the Chief will sensationalize this fact, then how can anyone believe anything he says?
And as an AK-47 on Fox News.
The media never gets it right.
I have an SKS that I use as a truck gun on the ranch.
If you pull the action out of the stock, you can then remove the SKS magazine and replace the action. That allows you to use the long AK magazines which function in place of the old SKS magazine, and hook on the original SKS magazine release. Rapid reload for the SKS, if you need more than 30 shots to hit something.
Yep, there are kits to replace the fixed mag with detachable SKS mags (have a long tongue on them) or AK mags.
A few of the AK mag conversions work, but not all of them.
You can replace the fixed mag by disassembling the firearm. Then you can use either a 5,10,20,30 or 40 round magazine. Although it would be probably quicker to use stripper clips with the 10 round fixed mag because the after market hi-cap mags have a tendency to jam.
It’s a cheap shooter, but lately it’s tough to find the surplus 7.62 x 39’s.
It all depends on what state you're in. No penalty in some states, loss of CCW permit in others.
Loss of CC permit for one. Fine probable, as well as loss of weapon. However, you’d still have your life.
