A LARGE number of workers are trapped in lifts and 7000 others have been evacuated after an explosion rocked an office block in Melbourne's CBD this afternoon.
About 7000 workers have been evacuated from two buidlings at 570 Bourke St and 600 Bourke St following the explosion at an electricity substation behind the 35-storey office tower at 570 Bourke St.
Five workers are believed to be trapped in lifts at 570 Bourke with a yet-to-be determined number trapped at 600 Bourke.
The fire brigade is in contact with the trapped workers via mobile phone and they are reported to be OK.
28 people have been treated at the scene, with six taken to hospital.

Pesky Calvinists no doubt.
Seriously, prayer up.
God, please protect those in need. God, Save us all!
“Thousands evacuated from Melbourne city block
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Thousands of workers have been evacuated from two office buildings in the Melbourne CBD following an electrical fire in the basement.
“At 12:31pm the MFB were called to an electrical substation fire in an underground carpark behind 570 Bourke St.” the MFB said.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Workers are now said to be returning to their offices following the fire.”
Ditto. This report sounds encouraging, at least in no reports/fears of lots of folks being killed.
Prayers for all concerned
Cindy, there was a copyright complaint about Free Republic having anything from The Age posted here. Unfortunately your post has to be removed.
I’m sorry Moderator and thanks for removing the post.
Meee to the rescue! Silly news paper websites who don't want to change. I'll fix this!
I just happened to read a small update article from an *unnamed austrailian news source*. Basically what they said was, That 600 Bourke street block... Power has been restored a few hours after the incident.
But some chap by the name of Mr. Walker said that it might be a few days before power is restored to the Marland House. Pity that.
An electric man from the Citipower company said that the explosion mucked things up for about 200+ businesses down there. But the juice should be back by now.
Seems all the safety precautions were followed, and no one seriously got hurt in the evac.
There ya go Cindy. Don't let the big scary boogieman from down under stop the flow of info! :) Peace.
That was nice of you to explain the yank rather then it just disappearing with no reason given.
There are times that some people don’t want to hear anything from us at all. We try our best. Thanks for the feedback.
LOL, that is a very good paraphrasing job you did. I think it works. Thanks.

Prayers for the Aussies.
