Abortions at Stroger up 78% since 2003

COUNTY | 'Doing a better job of reaching out to the community'

December 3, 2007 BY STEVE PATTERSON Staff Reporter spatterson@suntimes.com

For the second straight year, Cook County taxpayers are set to pay for a record number of abortions at county health facilities.

The dramatic increase at Stroger Hospital runs counter to state and national trends. Since 2003, abortions at Stroger Hospital have increased 78 percent -- to about 4,000 this year from 2,243.

The county has more than doubled the number of abortions performed each week since the service was reinstated in 1992 -- to a current average of 77 a week from a self-imposed limit of 30 a week.

County officials and abortion advocates say the need has always been there, but the county wasn't addressing it.

After streamlining operations and making other changes, county clinics are turning away fewer women than before.

"We've done a lot of restructuring in the last two or three years," said Dr. Ashlesha Patel, head of the county's family planning division. "We're also doing a better job of reaching out to the community."

'It's out-and-out wrong' Some say the county shouldn't be spending more than $1 million a year on the service.

"We should put that money toward educating people on alternatives," said Commissioner Liz Gorman, a Republican who opposes abortion except in cases of rape or incest. "It's out-and-out wrong that we're doing that many. It's outrageous."

Board President Todd Stroger, who campaigned on a promise to support abortion rights, said he'll "continue to support providing quality health care services" to all residents if there's a need.

"I believe in a woman's constitutional right to reproductive health care," he said. "It should not be limited by anything, including politics, geography or financial status."

Abortions were available at county facilities from 1973 until 1980, when Board President George Dunne instituted a ban.

In 1992, Board President Richard Phelan lifted that ban.

Records show a relatively constant number of abortions were performed until the recent uptick.

Women are asked for a $50 co-payment, but they are not denied care if they can't afford it, Patel said.

"continue to support providing quality health care services"

Except, obviously, to the unborn.

This is the attitude of these deranged killers:

The county has more than doubled the number of abortions performed each week since the service was reinstated in 1992 -- to a current average of 77 a week from a self-imposed limit of 30 a week.

County officials and abortion advocates say the need has always been there, but the county wasn't addressing it.

It’s disgusting that killing a fetus can be called ‘reproductive health care’.

Almost 11 murders a day! And they thought that Scarface Al Capone was a bad guy. The only time he got close to that number was on St. Valentine’s Day.

Really? If you make abortions free and easy, they increase???? Amazing.

In the U.S., 3700 abortions a week - 1.3 million per year. Pray for an end to abortion!

the need has always been there

I don't buy it. Libs just don't get it - when the alleviation of the consequences for behavior choices is unavailable, there are less people choosing that behavior.

But, when they provide free alleviation of consequences, the rate of those consequences naturally goes up, and they ALWAYS spout that "the need was more than we had thought originally - we need more funding".

Unfortunately, your math is incorrect. In the United States, abortuaries murder just over 3500 children PER DAY. Worldwide, the abortion poll is about 1 million PER WEEK.

Sorry - I copied the stat wrong - it is 3700 per day - worldwide, 126,000 per day - 46 million per year. Stats from the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform.

—NOTHING the left does follows any logical pattern—

Well, no, and almost by definition.
Their worldview is outcome based instead of rules based.

We see the rules, and those who play by those rules best end up with the best results, and we say this is obviously “fair”.

They see the disparate outcomes, decide that those outcomes are unfair, and seek to change the rules, almost on a case by case basis.

The same goes for their agenda - in this case, a micro agenda of no consequences for sexual choices. (The macro agenda is and always will be the destruction of our traditional society).

They seek a certain outcome, and adjust the rules in every case in order to achieve it.

Dr. Ashlesha Patel, head of the county's family planning division

Nice to see that Hindu family planning come's to Chicago. Guess they needed the diversity of introducing Caste system beliefs into the formerly Catholic Chicago polity.

Since most of the babies being murdered are probably lower caste in "Dr" Patel's eyes, I'm sure there isn't much concern on the good Dr's part.

Here are some more sickening statistics:

1. More Americans die in abortuaries every two days than have died in the war on terror (including the deaths from 9/11/01).

2. More Americans die in abortuaries every year than have died in ALL WARS AMERICA HAS FOUGHT IN COMBINED.

So much for safe, legal, and rare. Tax funded abortions always leads to higher abortion rates.

Although I wonder how illegals are having abortions at Stroger Hospital.
