Mike Huckabee raised more taxes in 10 years in office than Bill Clinton did in his 12 years...If you measured the increases in the revenue stream, the Huckabee tax cuts far exceeded Clintons but that would be unfair because the economy had grown and the same penny of tax would produce far more under Huckabee.
But if you look at the major taxes, I see the aggregate Huckabee taxes as greater, especially if you deduct the 4 cent gasoline and diesel taxes that Clinton vetoed in 1985 and that the legislature enacted over his veto.
Anyway, the sales tax is the big revenue producer. Both raised it by 1.5 cents on the dollar and both expanded it to cover a myriad of services. Clinton raised motor fuel taxes a little more, Huckabee cigarette taxes a lot more.
A further note: Huckabee claims credit for a major tax cut in 1997, saying it was the first tax cut in Arkansas history (there had been many prior to that) and that he forced the Democratic legislature to curtail its impulse to always raise taxes.
The facts: The omnibus income tax cut bill of 1997 was proposed by Gov. Jim Guy Tucker in the spring of 1996. It had multiple (7) features, all aimed at relief for middle-class families or the elderly. He asked interim legislative committees to expand on his plan. Tucker then resigned before the legislature convened after his conviction on Whitewater-related charges, and Huckabee took office.

Paging dano1...
Both panderers with few equals.
Where have I heard that? Gee that sounds familiar! I know I have heard that before...
Huckabee sort of reminds me of Slick, without the overt, sexual deviance. They both have that Benny Hinn approach to the American political scene. We will be lucky if Mikes meteoric rise in the polls proves to be just another shooting star, ooh, ahh, and there it goes.
He's a Music Man, so we can surely trust him.
He acts and speaks like a Democrat. He loves illegal aliens and taxes even though these are unpopular with the voters. He is sure to lose in the general election. Can somebody explain why he leads in Iowa? Have Democrats passed themselves off as Republicans in the polls?
tax hike mike ping
Well, what did they expect.
When you don’t have over $30 Million a DAY coming in from cocaine sales, you have to find other means to run the state and pay bribes.
- Increased the tax on diesel by 4 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999) Note: Contrary to what Huckabee has said repeatedly in debates, speeches and TV shows, the 1999 gasoline and diesel taxes were not submitted to the voters and approved by 80 per cent of them. It was never submitted to a vote. It was the governors bill and it became law without a vote of the people. What the voters did approve in 1999 was a bond issue for interstate highway reconstruction but it did not involve a tax increase. Existing taxes and federal receipts were pledged to retire the bonds.
So, we should have let the feds pay for the roads Arkansas residents use, right? Well, if the budget needs to be balanced, then what can we do to pay for them? Huckabee, to my understanding, noted the BOND issue was approved, and the tax requirements followed. Go through this article VERY carefully, because these guys are trying to split some hairs on the record.
Mike Huckabee raised taxes. Guess what - that was part of the way George Bush and most conservatives tried some of the revenue streams back on the state budgets; it was no fun for any governor. No state government was able to hold the line on taxes during the last decade. But we purists are going to run some Senator or Congressman who can say 'no taxes on my watch;' they were not in the position of a governor, which takes some guts and unpopular positions.
And on what sort of things were taxes raised? There was an increase in the state sales tax, with a failed Huckabee rebate to offset part of that amount on food. There were some fuel charges added to facilitate the road work. There were several larger 'leisure' taxes - cigarettes and tobacco products, alcohol, etc. - all which are paid for from a consumptive want instead of need (IE higher gas or food taxes) standpoint, and which funded mandates.
Look, if I want falsehoods, I'll read the DailyKOS; this is a liberal paper (loved that glowing lead story supporting liberal Democrat Blanch Lincoln's $68M for Arkansas project - oh, no, she won't be raising taxes, she's going to get that money from the FEDS, us) in a state known to support Democrats. I think Mike Huckabee's record will speak for itself on fiscal discipline.
BUT WAIT, there's still more - read the other editorial story on how the state infrastructure is still needing some fixes, and the taxes from Huckabee were now too small. Here we go for the final two paragraphs Actually, Arkansans on average now pay less in taxes per mile traveled considering inflation than they did 75 years ago during the Great Depression. The rate has risen from 6 cents a gallon in 1932 to 21.5 cents a gallon. It was last raised, by 4 cents a gallon, in 1999.(that was Huckabee, boys and girls)
In another 14 months, January 2009, the legislature will convene again and you should not be surprised and neither should you be disappointed if there is an effort to raise those taxes again, by more than a nickel a gallon. It is the price of civilization.
Good thing that guy Huckabee's out of there, now maybe we can figure out how to get the feds to fund it...
I'm keeping my guns, looking for good judges, and want somebody who is interested in fixing problems without making his living in the DC beltway. Yes, I'm for Huckabee...
In fact it's worse. At least Clinton didn't pander to illegals as badly as Huckabee did.
All of this talk about Huckabee being so good and such a good christian is just that, TALK, when you get right down to it you see that he is a greedy, thin skinned cross between “BJ” Bill Clinton, Benny Hin, Mordecai Jones (the Flim Flam Man) and Joseph Goebbels, however, if cornered by a hard question,
he’ll dance the Susquehanna Shuffle just like Huckleberry Hound. He is a prize, but, not presidential.
Yeah, I just don't get it. The Iowa voters must either be insane or high.
Yeah, that's probably why he's doing so well there: conservative evangelicals supporting him simply because of his religion.
I thought they had more sense than that. But then, what can you expect of people who believe the universe is only 6,000 years old?
Records speak for themselves. FRED has a true record of Conservatism.
“Mike Huckabee raised more taxes in 10 years in office than Bill Clinton did in his 12 years...If you measured the increases in the revenue stream”
Am I reading this right? Is he saying that more revenue = higher taxes?
