MyFoxNY.com -- A charity dedicated to the memory of the fallen heroes of 9/11 is coming under fire for making promises it hasn't kept. Its critics are some of the very people who helped to found the charity. Fox 5's Arnold Diaz reports.
TOPICS: Crime/Corruption; US: New York
KEYWORDS: fraud; phony911charity
Jim Haywood Jr. formed this charity after trying to rip off the http://www.americas911ride.org/ based in VA. Jim volunteered to run the New York Americas 9/11.org helping the founder Ted Sjurseth in the years 2003 to 2005. He was asked to leave in August of 2005 because of questionable activity. Watch the video at the Fox site. The Americas 9/11 ride based in Virginia has given out $60,000 in scholarships and $30,000.00 next year. Check their site.
The crook's site is down already.
This is the real site he stole the idea.

I have one rule when it comes to charitable contributions:
NEVER give any money to a charity unless you: (1) are involved with their work; (2) are familiar with their work and their financial dealings; and/or (3) you know someone with a solid reputation who is directly involved with the organization.
I hate to be cynical about this, but most charities are probably nothing more than cash-generating rackets to begin with.

I hope they plan to make the distinction clear or they stand to lose a lot of year-end donations.

The crook is well know in the greater NY area. His ride gets about 40 riders. The real 9/11 charity gets close to 1000 and has been around for 8 times longer. The police, firefighters, EMTs know the real one. All the college students that got the money for school know the real one. If you look at the Virginia site you will see the pictures of all the success. It might hurt a little but not for long.

I have worked with the real 9/11 foundation as well.
We did know of the reputation of Mr. Ted Sjurseth, and after meeting the people he had working that day, they showed themselves to be of the highest caliber. The people I came in contact with that day were selflessly giving of their time, and totally supportive of this organization.
Sometimes you need to get involved with the work, even for a short time to find out exactly what an organization is all about.

Interesting read....I am afraid there are many groups that do not meet the standards we all wish them to achieve.
