Last resort and the letter of the law (INS screwed up priorities )
Philadephia Inquirer ^ | 11/26/07 | Michael Matza

America has always prided itself as "a nation of laws, not men," where the rules that bind society matter more than a person's title, economic standing, or who knows whom. What recourse is there, then, when the scales of justice seem out of whack? Should another test of what is right and fair apply? Should the system make exceptions for specific people in cases that an outraged public considers egregious?

Attorneys for Pedro and Salvacion Servano, Filipino immigrants facing imminent deportation, think it should. In a last-ditch effort to prevent their clients' expulsion

“It looks like these people tried to do the right thing and got screwed.”

And they are in the same boat as every other law-abiding American. So, why should they get any special treatment? We obey the laws, pay our taxes and live on fixed budgets - without government freebies.

It may sound callous; however, I am of Spanish descent. My mother immigrated legally, as did both my in-laws. I did not speak English at home; but the nuns made sure that I learned the 3 R’s jst as fast as everyone else.

I agree however if they are going to deport people I would rather start with the violent criminals and parasites. These people sound like productive citizens.

Good for you AND the nuns. The one thing Catholic schools do without fail is show that performance in school is very much dependent on expectations. The nuns (and brothers) simply expected you to perform, so you did.

None of this "self-esteem" BS. The nuns knew your were all sinners, and treated you accordingly---:^)

It will take a whole herd of the typically semi-illiterate illegals to even come close to what they have contributed to the U.S. in taxes and overall contribution to our society in general.

Maybe and maybe not, however I sure wish they would deport the attorney. If you lose a case you lose a case, stop this going around the law and asking for special favors.

Normally I'd be for confiscation and deportation, but this one does sound like some bureaucrat's bad hair day.

They were asking for citizenship after doing all the stuff we asked of them - they even got here on their own separate merits (marriage status is irrelevant)...maybe this is a good case.
