It’s even worse than you are thinking. Houston International Airport was not opened until 1969

Wrong. Google William P. Hobby Airport. It was named "Houston International Airport" in 1954 before getting the William P. Hobby name in 1967

Never lived there and just an infant when the Kennedy assassination took place, but the airport and hotel portion of this statement fits. Hoobby Airport was called Houston International at that time and by current Google Maps data the Shamrock hotel location was about 22 minutes away.
