Democrat Al Franken has netted a big endorsement in his bid to challenge Republican Sen. Norm Coleman next year. The political arm of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 5 voted Saturday to back Franken, a comedian turned candidate. The politically potent union also screened Franken's main rival for the Democratic nomination, Minneapolis attorney Mike Ciresi.
The union represents 43,000 public and nonprofit employees in the state. Its leaders said in a news release that Franken's membership in four entertainment unions and his proven ability to raise money for the campaign put him in a stronger position than Ciresi.
AFSCME said Coleman didn't respond to an invitation to meet with screeners for a possible endorsement.

Minnesota Ping.....
In Duluth ASFME cut out the middle man and put an ASFME employee on the city councel. (She got beat in the last election though)
She was appointed or elected (and then voted out)?

Hyeah, right. Like union pukes would ever pick anyone but the dimocrap candidate...
I don’t blame him for not wasting his time. Besides, what conservative (or even CINO) /wants/ an endorsement from the piggies that slop at the government trough?
Reason enough to move from Minn.
Franken no doubt has the little yellow school bus union wrapped up as well ...
Another reason why public employees never should have been allowed to organize. Supporting an idiot like Stewart Smalley just proves how stupid they are.....
No kidding. I don't see how this is "big news" or an "important endorsement" either. If would have only been such if the union had not endorsed the Democrat party candidate.
Norm has been hanging around the middle, more than usual, recently. He always voted against ANWAR and now has been voting with more regularity with his DFL companion, Amy (wretch!!!) Klobuchar. They held hands and voted for the SCHIP crap.
Four years ago she was elected, which was the same as being appointed by AFSCME. Not so this year. A small ray of hope?
The other members of the host committee included noted anti-war activist Sean Penn (and wife Robin Wright Penn); noted pro-marijuana activist, Woody Harrelson; noted hottie Edward Norton; and noted lesbians Melissa and Tammy Etheridge.
I remember how elated I was when Norm Coleman beat that joker Mondale running for Wellstone’s seat.
Didn’t realize how RINO he’d turn out to be. Oh well, at least he votes correctly SOME of the time.
I just don’t get the ANWAR vote. I would think that Minnesotans would understand cold winters, foreign oil dependence, and permafrost issues... :-)
We’ll take all the small victories we can get...

If I was in charge, there would be a constitutional amendment prohibiting government employees from unionizing. The very idea is ludicrous.
Unfortunately, I checked with Mrs. Tick and she confirmed that I am NOT in charge.
Surprise, surprise! AFSCME is the most socialist of the unions, with the possible exception of the NEA. It can’t come as any great shock that they’re going to support a sniveling, myopic, liver-lipped greaseball like Al Frankensteen. Did anyone think they’d back the conservative? (Not that Norm Coleman is any great shakes, mind you.)

Big surprise. Union support.
Yeah, but the way Norm has been voting, recently, he stood a good chance of getting that endorsement, had he only persued it.
OT.....One year anniversary of the “Flyin’ Imams” tomorrow.......
