The State Department expects to announce, perhaps as early as today, that volunteers have filled all 48 open jobs at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad for next year and that it will not order any foreign service officers to work there against their will, officials said yesterday.
Volunteers for the last three or four positions are currently being vetted. Once that process is completed, a senior department official said, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will ask personnel officers to assure her that everyone selected "does in fact have the right skill sets" and meets all requirements before an announcement is made.
Rice's decision late last month to order diplomats to serve in Iraq if enough volunteers could not be found caused an uproar at State, where large-scale "directed assignments" have not been used since the Vietnam War. But while the controversy is expected to subside for now, internal strains over personnel shortages and policy are likely to reappear as long as Iraq continues to be a dangerous diplomatic assignment and to drain resources from other posts.
"The secretary reserves the right, now and in the future," to send officers where they are needed, said the senior official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the formal announcement was still forthcoming.

Heck, I’ll go. Do I have to buy new clothes?
looks like the weenies had enough dedicated co-workers to bail them out
I remember the news conference where the one guy was whining about it being unsafe. Sorry bub, maybe you picked the wrong line of work. I’m sure they explained the possibilities of postings to less than desirable lands in the application...
These people are asses. They have a higher chance of being murdered in Washington, D.C. than in Baghdad. The world will never know this thought, because the MSM won’t report the facts.
Foggy Bottom is about as useful as the UN.
They should do what Ronald the Magnificent did with the Air Controllers. Fire all of the bastards and get new blood in there.
When you join the military you acknowledge you can be sent anywhere you’re needed.
When you become a diplomat how can you not expect the same?
“Sorry bub, maybe you picked the wrong line of work.”
I am sorry more Americans do not or have not known personally one or more State Department “Officials”
They are among the lowest forms of life within the federal government. In terms of damage to the country. They do more to harm the interests of the United States and our allies than the Democratic party has done in years.
They are career bureaucrats on the gravy train...Most are exceedingly liberal. What would be illustrative is to find out just how many have become millionaires before they retire. The only members of the State Department worth a Dime are their Log & Security Personell who are generally competent. Ever ready to clap the Security folks and Marines on their backs when they are looking. The career bureaucrats speak of those people and the Marine Embassy Personell with contempt behind their backs.

I just finished reading a military Sci-Fi novel "Yellow Eyes" by John Ringo. In that book it is incidentally mentioned that since 1932 the US State Department has been corrupted to the service of the Darhel, an elflike race plotting the enslavement of humanity.
A lot of humor in that book, but when I read that part, I thought - "Gee - that would explain a LOT"
Dennis Kucinich?
Wimps.
The State Dept. is the employer of first and last resort for spoiled Ivy Leaguers who are unsuited to working in their rich daddy’s business or law firm. They can thus have status and a fat paycheck while accomplishing absolutely nothing for the country, and their families don’t have the liability of hiring them. It’s a win-win for everyone but the taxpayer...as usual.
Some dipllomats have always thought they are a cut above the common soldiery. Which is why the military so often gets stuck cleaning up after the diplomats fail.
I still say Duncan Hunter has the right idea on this
Every morning for 20 years I woke up and said, “I am willing to die for my country today.” A few days I almost did. These people disgust me.

LOL
You must have hit on it..They are absolutely strange ducks.
Just think about that guy who came before the Nation whining about the risks of being deployed to Bagdad. Most people who are afraid at least try to hide it, are somewhat ashamed when others are willing to risk their lives to accomplish a task...He thought nothing of proving his personal cowardice and that of his friends before the whole nation.
Of course I guess we got an insight into them just a while back here with Blackwater.. Blackwater had not lost a single
State Department member while under their protection that I know of. For that success the State Department threw Blackwater to the sharks. All because the Malaki government whose loyalties are known to everyone (but the State Department) got frustrated at the success of recent US Operations and decided to try and Gum up the works.
Right now the Shia’s have control to such a degree they do not want to start crap with US forces and risk being removed from power at the top.. The Sunni’s have suddenly realized they will not be the power in Iraq regardless and will be slaughtered if the US does leave now. So they are rushing to get their people in positions of authority as best they can.
Things could go South real quick but they are interesting.
Then in the face of at least some success you have the State Department showing they are a bunch cowardly dorks (and dorkesses). Lol
