Anti-Romney, anti-Mormon calls being made in Iowa
Politico.com ^ | 11/15/07 | Johnathan Martin

In an apparent push poll, a research firm has called Iowa Republicans this week praising John McCain and critcizing Mitt Romney and his Mormon faith.

An individual in Manchester, Iowa, contacted me on Wednesday night saying he received a call with information about McCain's military service and anti-spending record.

Then there were "lots of negatives on Romney," said the recepient of the call in an e-mail, including mentions of his "flip-flops," hiring illegal immigrants as landscapers and extensive discussion of Mormonism.

"Statements were on baptizing the dead, the Book of Mormon being on the level of the Bible, and one about equating it to a cult," said the Iowan, deeming them "common criticisms of Mormonism."

"I think they asked twice if being a Mormon would be an issue," this person added.

The person conducting the call said he didn't know who they were polling for, said the source.

McCain's campaign, which has fielded calls into their Iowa headquarters complaining of similar such calls, emphatically denies being responsible for the call.

"Senator McCain strongly rejects this style of campaigning and we have absolutely no involvement whatsover," said Jon Seaton, McCain's top aide in Iowa.

Another McCain source, however, said tonight that the calls had been traced back to a number linked to the Tarrance Group -- Rudy Giuliani's pollster.

Giuliani spokeswoman Maria Comella said their campaign has "absolutely nothing to do with this."

Calls to Ed Goaes, Giuliani's pollster and a principal at the Tarrance Group, and Mitt Romney's campaign were not immediately returned.

The same McCain who played the victim to the hilt in 2000 over push polls now engages in them himself. What hypocrisy. And very ugly to use Romney's religion as an attack point. America, and especially the GOP candidates, should be more mature than to use religion as a weapon, or a reason not to vote for someone. And then McCain tries to claim it's Giuliani doing it. LOL.

Over the past few years, I think the score is Irrelevance 25, John McCain 0.

Another reason not to ever vote for McCain. I thank him for his service in Vietnam, and kindly ask him to withdraw and retire from the Senate.

Do we really think that the democrats won’t do this (and MORE) to Mitt Romney?! That they won’t plaster photos of Rudy in drag all over the place?! Please, conservatives and 9/11 moderates/Reagan democrats, get behind Fred Thompson!!!

If Mitt was behind it, wouldn’t he have used Mike Huckabee as the straw man?

Ironic that half a century ago, a Catholic had to answer questions that he was unfit for the presidency based on his religion. Now we have the possibility of a Catholic claiming a Mormon is unfit for the presidency based on his religion.

The funny thing is that the targets of these attacks aren’t exactly model Catholics or Mormons, considering their public policies vis-a-vis what their churches teach. I’d like each candidate better if they adhered more to their church’s teaching, not less.

“Please, conservatives and 9/11 moderates/Reagan democrats, get behind Fred Thompson!!!”

They’ll do it to Thompson too. There’s no one they won’t dig up, or invent, some dirt on. This is going to be the ugliest political campaign in memory. NO candidate will be immune from the tactics of the Dems. Trust me, they’ll find something on Thompson, especially with his past as a lobbyest.

They've already tried all that with Fred ("trophy wife", "Lazy", "lobbied for a pro-choice group") but still National Right To Life endorsed him. It also looks like the National Rifle Association (NRA) will endorse Fred in the primaries!!

Oh trust me, they’ll hold their fire on the worst smears until the general election. Trophy wife isn’t going to change anyone’s vote.

It will be interesting if the NRA does endorse Fred in the primaries . I read the article you linked me too and must say it was quite surprise , as they have always waited until the general before endorsing .

If NRA endorses Thompson, that will be quite a development for him. I’m very surprised to hear NRA is considering such an early move, but considering Fred’s RKBA position, its believable.
Remember that Bubba himself credited NRA with making the difference in W's tight win over Algore.

What is it that McCain did to be caught in hypocrisy?

This article doesn’t say McCain did it—it says he was being attacked along with Romney.

As to it being tracked to an assoicate of Giuliani’s campaigners at the Tarrance Group, AP is reporting it based on prior news reports (not on anything sourced to McCain).

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,

They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would.

They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.

Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.

But I would not feel so all alone,

Everybody must get stoned.

Fred will easily withstand the stoning from the beast, and she will recieve it back in quadruple from Fred.

Any press coverage is better than no press coverage, blaming it on the one nearest in numbers is obvious.

I’d really like to be sure who is responsible for this before getting upset about it. It could even be a Democrat campaign. I’m going to wait and see.

Where does it say McCain was attacked? And the company that made these calls is an outfit in Provo, Utah called “Western Watts” which the Terrence Group is not using in this election season. They’re using a group in Houston. This is McCain’s people.
