Climate change is a 'weapon of mass destruction', Christians warned
Christian Today ^ | Nov 15 2007

Posted on 11/15/2007 4:22:41 PM PST by camerakid400

Climate change was described as a ‘weapon of mass destruction’ by a leading scientist during a special breakfast event this week.

Almost 100 local church leaders and politicians gathered in Belfast to be briefed by Sir John Houghton of the Nobel Peace Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

During the breakfast on Tuesday, he challenged the gathering to reduce its carbon emissions. He stated the global average temperature rise must be kept as far below two degrees Celsius as possible.

Warning of the consequences should the challenge not be heeded, Sir John said: "The impacts of global warming are such that I have no hesitation in describing it as a weapon of mass destruction.”

Green Party MLA Brian Wilson and Joe Furphy from Eco-congregation also addressed the politicians and church leaders present, highlighting the role that each could play in addressing the ‘Two degrees… one chance’ challenge. Eco-congregation is an environmental programme which shows UK congregations how to care for God’s creation.

The breakfast, hosted by Presbyterian Moderator Rev John Finlay and Bishop of Down and Dromore Harold Miller, was a Micah Challenge event to highlight the impact of climate change on the world’s poorest communities.

Micah Challenge is a global movement of Christians, churches and Christian organisations united to call on world governments to work towards meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The MDGs are eight targets set in 2000 to halve global poverty by 2015, and MDG seven relates to environmental sustainability.

Speaking after the event Tim Magowan, National Manager of Tearfund Ireland, a local Micah Challenge partner, said: “All around the world poor people are already seeing changes in the weather consistent with climate change predictions and it is appropriate that we take practical steps here in Northern Ireland to help them."

Stephen Cave, National Director of Evangelical Alliance Northern Ireland, another local Micah Challenge partner, added: “‘Two degrees… one chance’ is a stark message but in the run up the UN Climate Change Conference to be held this December in Bali, it is vital that our local politicians and church leaders engage seriously with this challenge."

Good idea. We ALL have to do our part.

The IPCC is the biggest fraud of a scientific organization ever put together. The Nobel Prize is quickly becoming a joke.

I am surprised everyday at how many friends of mine say their church is preaching about environmentalism. Its one thing to take care of God’s creation, but its another thing entirely when pulpits become outlets for unchallenged scientific theories.

This is so much crap. God told Noah that he would not destroy the world again.

The argument can be made that global warming is the hand of god creating more food (more people= more carbon=warm earth=longer growing season=more food) for a growing population.

I suggest we trust Him

“God told Noah that he would not destroy the world again.”

With water. He will destroy it again, only with fire. “The elements will melt in the heat.”

Did any of the speakers mention the billions of poor people condemned to die by malnutrition, ill health, sickness, disease, and hunger and bad water caused DIRECTLY by the LACK of affordable energy in their countries?

Did any “preacher” mention the 12 - 26% INCREASE in crop yields coming from the increased CO2 we have now, plus the EXTRA crop yields coming form better fertilizer and better watering and irrigation made possible by more affordable energy?

The continued improvements made possible by a longer growing season and more rain as GW continues - assuming it does continue?

The millions killed worldwide by COLD weather - greatly exceeding by a factor of 5 - 8x as mamny - the number of unfortunates who do die during summer heat spells?

The liberals in North Ireland are killing people. Deliberately for their socialist agenda of energy control.

No, just the Nobel Peace prizes are jokes. They’ve still got a pretty good idea about who does and who doesn’t deserve the science-related Nobel prizes.

The pastor where I go to church now said it's OK not to worry about global warming.

There was even a thing in the church bulletin that said to increase your carbon footprint by attending more church functions!

I'm so glad I left the liberal Methodist congregation I had been attending.

The left does this all the time. They use the Evangelicals whenever it suits their agenda. When they are done, they go back to abusing them. They do it with smoker ban legislation. In places like Alabama where they can’t find two liberal nanny state do gooder public serpents in the state legislature to rub together, they get the “church” to take a hard line and crusade on their behalf.
