New Yorkers going Christmas shopping online at Amazon.com will find an 8.375% surprise at the virtual cash register, courtesy of Governor Spitzer, who is moving aggressively to collect Internet sales taxes that have gone widely unenforced.

Under a new policy, major electronic retailers...

This issue needs to be the next issue blasted loud and clear to all New Yorkers. The Dems will never try to not pick our pockets and raise the cost of doing business. One man called John Gambling and said he makes sure that all his business servers are outside of New York and New Jersey. The Dems are like the mob. They want their cut in all we do.

All we ask from our government is to defend us against all enemies. And that's something these Dems find obsolete.

Why don't they just tax the amount of air you breathe?

It's only the beginning if they get to power.

Sooooo.....

Liberals never even bother to follow the Law of the Market, when all it takes is .009 seconds search to find a retailer that doesn’t charge the tax, Amazon will lose that business.

Spitzer is a thug, a liar, his feet stink, and he doesn’t believe in Jesus.

What an a** this guy is. I knew he was just getting warmed up with his licenses for illegals. Since then he’s been releasing hardened criminals out of jail early and now this. What’s next, what does the emperor have planned for us? I hope troopergate finally does him in but good.

Anyone really surprised by this? It was well known that Spitzer was a first class thug long before he ran for Gov. Even here in WI his name is legendary, as he totally ruined a very successful Wisconsin company a few years back.

I would like to say that New Yorkers are getting what they deserve, but then again, I don't deserve the total screwing I'm getting at the hands of our illustrious Crook in Chief, Gov. Diamond Jim Doyle either.

This is exactly how individual states went after taxes on cigarettes. It was an old law under ATF dragged up if I remember correctly by some Rep from Wisconsin and spread to New York and Michigan and who knows where all.

The AG's subpoenaed vendors records. Vendors are required to report cigarette sales to anyone other than a distributor to the State agency. The AG offices obtain credit card info via the vendor records and send out their threatening tax letters. I am not aware of any prosecutions against vendors--only the people who purchased. The part that irks me is that only government and business are allowed access to cheaper anything. We are forever committed to their tax rules. We are slaves.

Why don't they just tax the amount of air you breathe?

Given that every time you exhale, you emit CO2 into the atmosphere, and the fact that the environmentalists are lobbying the EPA to label carbon as an air pollutant, it may not be long before the liberals introduce us all to "breathing credits."

He’s currently at 25% re-electibility in NY according to the latest polls so I hope the state has learned its lesson. The one thing it needs desperately is the ability to recall clowns like him as California has.

dThe policy initiative doesn't affect vendors such as the bookseller Borders or clothier L.L. Bean which sells to New Yorkersboth through the Internet and stores. Such companies are already required to collect and remit taxes from online sales. That was established by a landmark case brought by the state of California against Borders' online operation

Since some retailers are required to charge sales tax then why not everyone. Are some more equal than others. Either don't charge sales tax at all or charge for everyone. Treating others differently in the same business is not a free market.

And as I listen to Rush play his press conference, Spitzer just talks about terrorism and illegals. This illegal driver's license was all about getting them as NYS voters. Lou Dobbs had me watching CNN about this. Then I noticed Dobbs was on Larry King. (Just channel surfing during commercials- I'm a Fox fan.) He didn't hesitate to mention the Motor-Voter aspect of NYS law. Get a license and register to vote all together. And that no one in any of the 2 agencies has the resources to cross check that the voter is a citizen.

Spitzer will bring this up again if the Dems win in '08. he as much as said in his conference, "the time is not right..."

I didn't vote for Spitzer but the more conservative upstaters were taken in by him and down here the Republican party is in disarray to a large extent.

Not that much - if Amazon has any sense it will simply refuse/discontinue to do business with affiliates who have any part of their operation located in the state of New York. And a couple thousand New York businesses will go under - they will be having difficulty remembering the Democrat party is for the “little guy”. Happy Holidays from the liberals of NY!
