The overarching goal of public schools (it seems) is to produce good liberals, not good thinkers, good worshipers of government nanny, nor self-reliance. I got out of teaching when it became apparent that the trends were away from teaching kids how to solve problems and find material to educate themselves, and toward automatronic students with minds turned to mush. Home schooling and private schools are the only hope I see for this nation.

I introduced my grandson to chess when he was about 2....along with his older step brother and sisters.....I always thought having a base with chess could help.....maybe it did, he turned into a 4 year old who could add numbers like 23 and 18 in his head, in a couple of seconds....his older siblings would quiz him. The problem is I think now at his age he’s likely very bored with school for the reasons you say.....they’ve quit challenging kids.
