Harris Poll Claims Americans Favor Roe Abortion Case, Question Biased

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new Harris Poll claims a majority of Americans favor the Roe v. Wade decision that allowed virtually unlimited abortions nationwide. However, the poll's question erroneously told respondents on three occasions that Roe only allowed abortions up to three weeks into the pregnancy.

Harris has asked the poll about support for the landmark Supreme Court case almost every year since the decision was handed down in 1973.

However, the question misleads survey participants.

It uses pro-abortion language saying the abortion should be "to the woman and her doctor to decide" and repeatedly telling them wrong information about the results of the case,

Harris asks: "In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that states laws which made it illegal for a woman to have an abortion up to three months of pregnancy were unconstitutional, and that the decision on whether a woman should have an abortion up to three months of pregnancy should be left to the woman and her doctor to decide. In general, do you favor or oppose this part of the U.S. Supreme Court decision making abortions up to three months of pregnancy legal?"

Despite the question's deficiencies, the poll finds only a small majority of 56 percent of Americans support the Roe decision.

Another 40 percent oppose Roe and four percent of Americans are undecided.

Surprisingly, Harris refuses to assign a margin of error to the poll and acknowledges that "error associated with question wording and response options" could play a role in affecting its results.

Other recent polls have confirmed a majority of Americans oppose the overwhelming number of abortions that Roe v. Wade allowed when it toppled pro-life laws across the country.

A recent Fox News poll reveals that a majority of Americans oppose the overwhelming majority of abortions that take place in the United States and a Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times survey found 50 percent of Americans opposed all or almost all abortions.

The Harris poll found Republicans oppose Roe on a 51-45 percentage point margin while Democrats (63-33 percent) and Independents (61-36 percent) favored it.

Harris also found that most Americans don't think Roe will ever be reserved as 24 percent say it will likely be overturned while 69 percent say it won't.

Harris also asked survey participants, "In general, do you favor permitting a woman who wants one to have an abortion in all circumstances, some circumstances or no circumstances?"

Some 25 percent of Americans always support abortion, 52 support it in some cases and 20 percent oppose all abortions.

That question provides only limited help in understanding the abortion views of most Americans because it doesn't delineate what "some circumstances" includes.

Surveys from CBS News reveal that a majority of Americans oppose abortions in about 98 percent of all cases.

The Harris Poll was conducted by telephone within the United States between October 16 and 23, 2007 among 1,052 adults.

The fact that the media is polling about abortion more and more indicates that they are worried, which is great news.

For the past 30+ years, the polls have been surprisingly stable:

In other words, 75% are against 95-100% of abortions.

These figures vary up and down by 2, 3, 5% from time to time depending on current news and, of course, the wording of the question. But at no time has anywhere near a majority supported abortion on demand by any woman, at any time, for any reason or no reason at all.... which is the status quo as determined by the Roe and Doe cases.

Pollsters and journalists habitually lie about what the Supreme Court actually did in its overtly fraudulent and unprincipled 1973 decisions.

The speed of the downward spiral of this country picked up in 1973 and has been accelerating ever since, thanks to the agenda driven left, fed by Satan, himself. The Democrat Congress doesn’t even pretend to serve the American people anymore.

If we flub up on this election, and do not elect the only consistent conservative running, Duncan Lee Hunter, we can only expect a crash landing before long. And there will be no survivors.

"In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that states laws which made it illegal for a woman to have an abortion up to three months of pregnancy were unconstitutional,

Note that the original ruling only allowed abortions in the first trimester. Now it's up to the moment of birth. Oh how far we've come baby! (sarc and pun intended)

Another insidious thing is/was SCOTUS's attitude toward Roe and all the following lawsuits by PP, especially by that moron Sandy O'Connor (thank God she's gone). In one of the cases, maybe P.P. v Casey(?), in her opinion which was the deciding vote, she wrote words to the effect...

'Even if the Supreme Court originally erred in deciding Roe, it's too late to do anything now. Abortion has become an industry unto itself and people depend on it for their livelihood. To reverse Roe now would hurt them financially and that would be unfair'.
Now how's that for sound Constitutional reasoning!! People make money off abortions so that's what counts the most. Forget the constitution, forget SCOTUS screwed up, it's a paycheck now dammit!

(On my old 'puter I had the specific case and Sandy Baby's moron opinion bookmarked, but I'm pretty sure it was P.P. v Casey)

Hmmmm...let me think...it was “Americans” who voted in Pelosi, Reid etc in ‘06. “Americans” who have changed my state, Virginia, into a blue state in ‘05, ‘06 and ‘07.

So I’m supposed to listen to what “Americans” say about abortion!? Am I really supposed to raise an eye brow and say, “well, isn’t that interesting”!?

What “Americans” have to say coupled with a poll peppered with trick questions is completely meaningless.

Pro-life issue is the single biggest issue the GOP has advantage over the Dems. It usually gives the pro-life GOP a 7% net vote.

You have a problem with people making money? If they can make a buck of off it, why not? You believe in the free market, don't you--or are you a Communist? (/sarc, for those without a sense of humor)

I see no virtue in executing the innocent because it's expedient; I see less virtue in those who would defend it and deny what it is--even if they are running for the office of the presidency. Human life is simply not disposable in a civilized society; neither is it a merely hot-button political issue.

Louis Harris got his start as John F. Kennedy’s pollster. Kennedy fired him after he realized that Harris was allowing his own politics to bias his polling.
