The rate at which infants die in the United States has dropped substantially over the past half-century, but broad disparities remain among racial groups, and the country stacks up poorly next to other industrialized nations.
In 2004, the most recent year for which statistics are available, roughly seven babies died for every 1,000 live births before reaching their first birthday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. That was down from about 26 in 1960.
Babies born to black mothers died at two and a half times the rate of those born to white mothers, according to the CDC figures.
The United States ranks near the bottom for infant survival rates among modernized nations. A Save the Children report last year placed the United States ahead of only Latvia, and tied with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia.

Aren't there some stats that show that single women lose their babies more? I wonder what the stats are for white, single mothers????

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that the reason our infant mortality rate is so high is due to the proponderance of illegitamate births to very young girls.

I think that anyone with a room temp IQ can get a job at the NYT, 5,000 abortions a day, and somehow we have a high child death rate?
If anything their numbers are low..gee..wonder why..?
Good old NYT. The very first sentence contradicts the deceptive headline.
I’ll step out a little further and speculate that our infant mortality rate isn’t really that high compared to those of other countries. Some of the countries with ostensibly lower infant mortality rates probably don’t include stillbirths or late term miscarriages in their calculations, nor do they have as many complicated pregnancies carried to term.
Reminds me of the old saying, "Lie, damn lies, and statistics." God forbid the NYT's analyze the data, controlling for substance abuse and prematurity before shouting racism from their rooftops. Go to any big city charity hospital. 90% of the maladies are self-inflicted.
The only solution is to change people's hearts and minds. More clinics and MD's won't change squat.

My guess is that if you extracted the “single unmarried female” from those statistics, you would find three things;
(1)the infant mortality rates when the mother is a single unmarried female would be much, much closer, among the different racial categories; (2)the occurrence of the single unmarried female block among mother who are black women would be larger - as a % of all black women, than it is among white women, and (3) if that category (single unmarried female) was removed from white-female and black-female groups - leaving only married females, the resulting rates of infant mortality would also be closer.
The single unmarried female who gets pregnant not only penalizes herself, economically, but every negative economic impact it places on her accrues, in some fashion, to her health and the child’s health as well.
The public policy problem that needs work is not racial, but moral - the young single unmarried mother.

Over the last quarter-century, women have entered the field of medicine in unprecedented numbers, changing not only its face but its character.
As they have dealt with the competing demands of professional and personal life, many women doctors have brought a different approach to the examining room and refused to work the schedules that had long been a badge of honor. (snip)
Perhaps if nearly every instance of infanticide perpetrated by the mother weren’t written of as death due to SIDS, and scuh murderesses were held accountable to their crimes, such would not be the case.
Alas, such is not to be, in the current legal/medical/psychological system which holds violence to be a strictly male phenomenon, and any violence committed by women to be ultimately caused by men.

We’re killing BLACK babies now ... Hillary cares - that’s why she wants healthcare for the “poor”.
The only reason that the US has a higher infant death ration is because we try to save any viable live birth that other countries call a still birth. It’s all a matter of semantics.
The US tries saving babies born weighing as little as 10 OUNCES.
Name me another country that tries to do this.
