Former Ohio Congressman Rob Portman says he's not giving up on running for higher office.
Portman is joining the Cincinnati law firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey.
But he tells The Cincinnati Enquirer that the firm says he's free to continue traveling Ohio and laying the groundwork for a possible run for Ohio governor in 2010.
Portman has started his own political action committee to finance his political trips around the state. He says other options include running against Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown in 2012.

I would reccomend that Porter run for the Senate rather than the Governorship. He has no background on state issues.
Given the importance of Ohio in presidential elections, would a VP slot in 2008 be out of question?
He should run for his old House seat and rid us of Jean Schmidt. He won’t do it for the team so I won’t be supporting him for any gubernatorial run. Go Kasich!

That’s not a bad idea.
I tend to agree.
I’d like to hear what Ohio Freepers think of that idea.
Portman would be the ideal veep candidate. I'm just jealous I didn't think of it first.
Hopefully, we may have started something that travels throughout the conservative blog-space.
Well, I’ll say the more responses on that topic on this thread, the more we can get DC people to notice.

Godness me, what a terrible idea. Ohio is in intensive care, electorally speaking and you want to have an internicine battle? It maketh no sense... Work hard to defend the many open seats, and give Portman a promotion to statewide office.
JMHO.
I think he’d be very tough. However, he’s a “southern” candidate (Cincy area), so I’d need to know how he can do in the central and northern parts of the state. But a great guy.
Is Jean Schmidt not conservative enough? I should check her ACU rating I guess. I thought conservatives applauded her when she stood up to Murtha on the House floor and quoted a soldier (or was it a Marine?) who said we would be quitters if we withdrew from Iraq.
Excellent!
Strickland and Brown ran on JOBS last election. How’s it in your area? Not so hot here...see Navastar (International Harvester).
My neighbor moved here from New Jersey seven years ago. Now she says Ohio’s beginning to look alot like Jersey!!
