A former Navy captain and prisoner of war in Vietnam was one of three who died Friday when a small two-engine plane crashed in California's Central Valley.

Cole Black of Escondido was aboard the twin-engine plane that crashed in an orange grove in a rural area near Delano, his wife, Karen Black, told The Associated Press.

Black, a Navy pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam and was jailed in a prison nicknamed "Hanoi Hilton" for nearly seven years, was heading home after speaking to students in Oregon about his experience as a POW.

In 1993 article, Black told the AP the exact time he spent in captivity.

"2,428 days and 18 hours and 35 minutes, six years and nine months," he said during a celebration commemorating the 20th anniversary of being released from prison.

Cole was aboard the Piper Aerostar 602P. It took off from Roseburg, Ore., about 75 miles southwest of Eugene, said Teresa Hitchcock, a spokeswoman for Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield.

Also aboard were Bruce Klein, the owner of several Papa Murphy's pizza restaurants in Oregon, and Sally S. Wilson, a retired school teacher, the News-Review newspaper in Oregon reported Friday.

The plane was being piloted by Klein, according to the News-Review.

The craft was registered to Midwestern Restaurants Inc. in Winchester, Ore., according to Federal Aviation Administration records.

Wilson, of Oakland, was a former physical education teacher, the New-Review reported.

The crash was reported at noon. It was being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA.

By the way, there is an extremely good chance that Cole Black was acquainted with John McCain.

The plane went down earlier today about 30 miles from me. It’s always more real when the story puts names to the victims.

RIP to all.

Bless them all, and their families. One can only imagine that Mr Black enjoyed every moment of his 34 years of freedom after the Hanoi Hilton.
