DITHERING DIPLOMATS: OPTIONS FADE ON IRAN NUKES
New York Post ^ | 11/06/07 | John Bolton

....

This pattern of failed diplomacy has gone on for over four years, starting with the efforts of Britain, France and Germany ("the EU-3") to talk Iran out of its pursuit of nuclear weapons. In 2003, Secretary of State Colin Powell acquiesced in this effort, even though it undercut our strategy to condemn Iran in the International Atomic Energy Agency for violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and then take the matter to the Security Council. There, we expected to obtain effective economic sanctions against Iran quickly, or else find out equally quickly that the council was a dead end, and then move on to other alternatives.

....

Unfortunately, the EU-3's fascination with negotiations lost sight of the ultimate objective - preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons - and became an end in itself. For the EU-3, the process became more important than the substance, especially the unstated but obvious EU-3 agenda of dealing with a proliferation threat their way, rather than resorting to military force, as the United States did against Saddam Hussein.

The result of more than four years of EU-3 negotiation is that Iran is more than four years closer to a nuclear-weapons capacity, and the United States and the world are in greater danger. I believe it was obvious from the outset that Iran wasn't going to renounce its quest for nuclear weapons voluntarily because it was part of a much larger strategy.....

Let's face it, the people who bleat about "diplomacy" about Iran's nukes have no real concern for stopping Iran from having nukes. Any semi-conscious person knows that Iran is not going to be talked about of nuclear weapons.

The EU-3 proved to be a joke and all that’s been accomplished is to keep the USA from pressing for any more serious steps..... but what really can stop the Mullahs, short of obliterating their capacity from the air?

You are not going to talk a religious zealot out of his destiny, as he sees it. Iran has from the outset been quite clear in their intentions. It was EU that was stupid in even trying to accomplish this. Iran is NOT North Korea, who is in desperate straits, and therefore has no reason to back off.......

The best sanction - arrange an simple accident at a key part of their main gasoline import terminal. Any number of dissaffected Iranian groups willing to take credit. Watch Iran grind to a halt.

The dilemma for EU-3 has been how to talk the mollas out of the nuisance of their nuclear weapons ambitions while keeping the regime itself intact.

EU has rather liked and benefited from the status quo vis-a-vis mollacracy (minus the nuclear weapons). It has been quite lucrative for business: keeping America forever the "enemy" and thus American competition, and Iranians' natural inclination towards the Americans out of Iran, while keeping the rulers -- AND their off-springs -- feeling vulnerable and isolated by American belligerence, thus pushing them even further into the bosom of the europeans where they have signed ever more lucrative long term illicit business contracts.

Why would the EU do anything to help the US get rid of their most valued mafioso business partners as they continue bilking Iran dry?

They truly thought they could talk their business partners into giving up their nuclear aspirations as they protect their rule.

Yes, the EU has, for decades, been stabbing themselves in the back by dealing with Iran on all sorts of deals. They weren’t really hurting us that much, more than hurting themselves in the long run. Now Iran has missiles capable of reaching Europe and soon may have nuclear tipped warheads. Then Iran will dictate their surrender to the Islamic Republic of Eurabia, backed by the millions of muslim immigrants the EU has so blithely allowed to flood EUROPE. They have sold their soul to the Devil for a handful of Euros...............

Rhetorical question! We’ve been conned for 4 years into talking, when the Iranians never had any intention of slowing down. When they seen us getting pissed they throw another into the mix to keep the conversation alive.
We are just as much at fault as the Euro’s, we should be smart enough to see through this crap.

The answer is to withdraw from Iraq, via Tehran.

I for one am not happy at all about the prospect of war with Iran, and I would caution everyone about being to cavalier here. It may in fact prove necessary to strike, but this not just going to be like Israel’s apparent raid on Syria - this is likely to start a major conflict that could have profound repercussions. Iran definitely will retaliate here in America, in Israel, Iraq, and God knows where else. Cooler heads must prevail on this one; we must find a way to strangle Iran into submission and only as a very last resort use military force there.

My dream cabinet of 2008:

President - Duncan Hunter
Vice President - Fred Thompson
Secretary of State - John Bolton
Secretary of Homeland Security - Tom Tancredo
Head of ICE - Jim Gilchrist
Presidential Press Secretary - Ann Coulter
Attorney General - Sherrif Joe Arpaio
Ambassador to Israel (and we move the Embassy to united Israeli Jerusalem) - David Horowitz
Ambassador to the UN - What Ambassador? In my dream list the US leaves the UN and kicks the UN out of the USA.

The EU does NOT want to neuter Iran, they need Iran to destroy Israel, (the real “problem” in the ME).
