Making Mitt Romney: How to fabricate a conservative
Harpers ^ | 11/07 | Ken Silverstein

Mitt Romney keeps his South Carolina headquarters in a single-story building at one end of Gervais Street, which is Columbia’s version of Washington’s K Street, lined with the offices of local lobbyists, P.R. consultants, and other fixers and power brokers. The main room of Romney HQ is decorated with hand-painted red-and-blue signs, mementos from previous campaign events: mitt is my hero! mitt’s the man! mitt’s my pick! I visited on a steamy Monday night in late July, a time of year when few South Carolinians are interested in politics and fewer still want their evening interrupted by pitches for a presidential primary six months away. But eleven volunteers, mostly college students, were hunched in cubicles spread around the office, diligently placing cold calls to area residents. Boxes of pepperoni pizza from Domino’s (a company Romney backed when he ran the investment firm Bain Capital) were piled on a table against a wall. “Well, I understand, ma’am, there’s a long way to go before the election,” the volunteer replied. “I just hope you’ll keep us in mind.”

-snip- In seeking to woo conservatives, Romney has also used his personal PAC—the Commonwealth Political Action Committee—to contribute lavishly to several national pro-life groups, the Federalist Society, the National Review, and the Heritage Foundation, among others.

The “electorate is not where it needs to be for us to succeed,” his campaign PowerPoint had concluded; hence, the strategy has been to move Romney where he needs to be to succeed.

There is a conservative vacuum, and that makes an opportunity for pretenders to be promoted.

JR,
You also know that Mitt hired a woman to shape his
image as a conservative, right? Why is shaping required,
if he is one already? Seems a communications director
would have sufficed...

Who was the phoniest Republican before Romney came along?

Even Jumpin Jim Jeffords at least said he was moderate, not conservative.

This article provides a big clue as to why Weyrich endorsed Romney.

Romney donated to his Heritage Foundation.

Sickening. These so called conservatives are for sale.

There is a conservative vacuum.

Another way of saying that the lack of true conservatives sucks. It's a shame that we get these pretenders instead of real ones.

I don't think there's a conservative vacuum. The conservative candidates aren't getting any traction.

“There is a conservative vacuum, and that makes an opportunity for pretenders to be promoted.”

I think it’s more the case that the most conservative candidates have been deemed to not be viable.

Romney's candidacy is something of a back-handed compliment to conservatives: he still believes he needs to get the conservative vote in order to win.

When all of the Republican candidates stand for nothing but watered-down leftism, i.e. compassionate conservatism, then we will know it is time to walk ... or time to regain control.

Mitt Romney is the only top tier Republican candidate who has lived his life following the principles of Conservative values.

People who try to say he is not Conservative come across as silly and petty.

To win the election a “conservative” has to appeal to independents and Reagan democrats, as well as to conservatives. Many conservatives seemed to not have made up their mind if they either want to win or to back someone who is pure but unelectable.

Name the conservative values he has lived by.

Do you mean only having one wife?

By that standard Obama and Edwards must also be conservatives.

If she was a Fred supporter and went to Precious Willard, she didn’t change her mind, she LOST her mind.
