Cut Adrift In Water World
INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY ^ | 11/2/2007

Once Britain ruled the waves, then the U.S. Navy. Now will it be judges from landlocked states such as Chad and Bolivia?

It will be, if LOST, as it is commonly known, receives a two-thirds majority required for ratification of a treaty on the Senate floor.

The administration supports the treaty that Ronald Reagan vetoed in 1982, arguing that it is not the same accord, but rather a version said to address Reagan's objections submitted by Bill Clinton in 1994.

We find that hardly an endorsement of a treaty also endorsed by the National Resources Defense Council, largely because of the environmental and economic restrictions it places on the U.S.

LOST would establish rules governing uses of the world's oceans, defined as waters more than 200 miles from land, placing them under the jurisdiction of a body called the International Seabed Authority.

The ISA would be empowered to selectively grant mineral, oil and fishing rights to countries and companies, collecting what amounts to a global tax for the privilege.

LOST would also establish rules of the road for the world's oceans. But the U.S. Navy already obeys standard international conventions and does not need a U.N. body to tell it how it how or where it can conduct operations to protect the U.S. Nor does it need the permission of a panel of judges in Hamburg, Germany.

The administration says the treaty exempts military activities. But it does not define a military activity. Would an American carrier task force off Iran violate the treaty? Is the use of active sonar to detect quiet enemy submarines be a violation if the Hamburg judges rule it harms marine life?

The administration also claims the support of the military, which likes the 12-mile limit on national claims of sovereignty.

"The treaty was co-authored by Elisabeth Mann Borgese, an admirer of Karl Marx, who ran the World Federation of Canada. She called the oceans the "common heritage of mankind" and in a January 1999 speech declared: "The world ocean has been, and is, so to speak, our great laboratory for the making of a new world order.""

Marx? New world order? The more I find out about this treaty the more I feel the need to ask myself why I voted for Bush who is leading the pack to get this treaty passed.

You know, in the old days, we used to not care what other nations claimed as the territorial limit. It was 12 miles because we said it was 12 miles and dared any other nation to challenge us. How did that work out for Lybia?

This bothers me with the President along with navy brass pushing for L.O.S.T. and wanting to turn the Navy into a type of foggy bottom peace corpse.

Call it for what it is. 7/10ths of the planet is water right? It will not stop at just oceans. It might be tin foil thinking but when it comes to the UN I err on caution.

If this passes and GWB signs it, will that be grounds for impeachment? Is a filibuster possible? This of course means that that satanic bastard, maurice strong of the UN, ends up OWNING 70% of the earth’s surface. This “lost cause” cannot be allowed to happen, just can’t!

I can not for the life of me understand why Bush is for this. Someone please give me a reason.

Between this and his stance on the open border makes me wonder why I voted for him. And then I remember who else was running. Be that as it may, George should step down and let Chaney run things.

“Is a filibuster possible?”

Yes. As we speak Senator Vitter and others are trying to put together a petition of 34 senators who could filibuster to show Reid that he shouldn’t even try to bring it to the floor. Its already made it out of committee. Call your senators.

Sadly my 2 senators are tester and madmax baucus, two of the sorriest excuses my beloved State of MONTANA ever had as senators. Did you know that Sen Conrad Burns(R-MT) lost by just 1729 votes out of 250,000 cast, and the key loss was just 5 miles away at the Flathead County Courthouse, AND that there were late night shenanigans at said courthouse during that election a year ago. Thus the control of the senate shifted probably due to dem vote interference right here.

Sadly one of my Senators is Biden. He chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that this treaty just came out of. I hear he rigged testimony 3 to 1 for the treaty. Carper will fall in line with him. The republican party sucks in Delaware. Its disorganized. Hell, if MA, and NY can produce a republican governor in the NE then why can’t DE. Forget about national representation.

Actually I once met a woman from DELAWARE, in Houston TX, we were both getting driver’s licences. At first, being a westerner, I was amazed that there were PEOPLE living in Delaware, and I’d actually MET one. Is this still true?
