San Francisco -- San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed suit Thursday to seek the permanent removal of Ed Jew from the Board of Supervisors, an action that could lead to a relatively quick resolution of the suspended supervisor's fate in city government.
The suit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, contends that Jew did not live in the district he represents on the board when he filed papers to run for election in 2006 or when he took office in December.
Of the myriad legal problems facing Jew, the suit most directly addresses the question of his residency and could be the first to result in a judgment on that question. If he loses the suit, Jew will no longer be a member of the Board of Supervisors.
"The public interest clearly demands a prompt judicial ruling to settle the question of whether Supervisor Jew met the charter's residency requirements to seek or hold his office," Herrera said.
Herrera's action had been expected since he asked state Attorney General Jerry Brown for permission in June to sue for Jew's removal. Brown gave the go-ahead last month.
The suit is the fourth significant legal case pending against Jew, although one of those - a hearing pending before the city's Ethics Commission on whether he should be thrown off the board - will be moot if Herrera wins his case.

Mr. Jeeves is also correct that he doesn't deserve being defended here. He is just one more corrupt politician an an area full of corrupt politicians.
Nevertheless, it must be terribly frustrating for him, being the only San Francisco politician who is not allowed to pick and choose which laws to obey, and which laws to ignore.
