GOP Presidential Candidates Woo 'Values Voters'
Fox News ^ | 19 October 2007 | Major Garrett

Posted on 10/19/2007 4:26:36 PM PDT by shrinkermd

As Friday's session opened, Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, told attendees they "can't rely on politicians alone" to advance the social conservative agenda. He then told a joke ribbing Capitol Hill lawmakers: one Democrat, one Republican, both of whom considered themselves grounded in conservative values, but neither of whom could recite the Lord's Prayer.

Taken together, these words suggested the depth of skepticism among values voters about the repeated appeals for support from politicians they view as less than authentic.

Perkins said social conservatives must end "judicial tyranny, which brought us Roe v. Wade," and press the future president to "move forward with public policy that promotes the protection of the unborn child."

Interestingly, Perkins drew a historical comparison between slavery and polygamy, calling them the twin evil of their time. At a conference where uneasiness over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's Mormon faith is a persistent topic of conversation and concern to some evangelical Christians...

As for marriage, Perkins said marriage between a man and a woman "must be enshrined in the U.S. Constitution."

Romney, alone among the top GOP presidential contenders, backs an amendment to the Constitution defining marriage as a union between a man a woman, a point he will drive home in his speech here today.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, trying to revive his once-flagging campaign, told a poignant and unscripted story about his captivity for 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, tracing the cruelty he endured to a personal discovery of the power of faith. He also called himself the only career-long pro-life candidate in the race and drew applause by saying he's pro-life "because I know what it's like to live without human rights."

I just excerpted the section on what the Perkins and others said. I note, on tonight's Fox News, one of panel stated that presently Evangelicals rate poverty ahead of abortion as a political concern. I think I heard that right, but I may not have.

Fred Heads will be more interested in the first part of the article where it discusses his candidacy and performance at the meeting.

Very little talk of what the candidates plan to do and a lot of pandering politics as an alternative.

This is just more of the “say anything,do anything” style of campaigning that is turning off voters across the country. Is there on man(or woman)of high moral principals left in politics today?I am sick and tired of the whole process and the people involved.

From The Corner on National Review Online:

Will The Values Voters Straw Poll Be Rigged?   [Byron York]

Some notes on the ongoing straw poll at the Values Voters Summit:

Tomorrow afternoon the results will be announced, and there are accusations that the whole thing is being manipulated by the Romney campaign.  Family Research Center insiders say they assume the campaigns, including Romney's, are trying to get the best result, and they don't rule out the possibility that the final total will reflect that.

The big problem is that people are allowed to vote online, and it seems obvious that that total will reflect whoever got more people to go online.  But people are also voting in person here at the Washington Hilton, and I'm told there's pretty good ballot security for them.  To vote, you have to register for the conference, at $95.  Then you have to present that registration at the polling booth before you can vote.  (You also have to make a $1 donation to FRC Action, the political action committee.)

I'm told that 2,200 people pre-registered for the conference and that there have been about 400 walk-up registrations today.  FRC expects more tomorrow, but that's still a pretty manageable number.  And while some of the campaigns might have brought some people in – "We've looked for a pattern but haven't found one," one FRC insider told me — it seems likely that we'll see far less skewed results at the conference site. So the interesting thing to do would be for FRC to separate the on-site voting totals from the online voting totals, and announce both.

By the way, the Giuliani forces assure me they're not participating in the straw poll here, just as they didn't participate in the Ames, Iowa straw poll or others around the country.  I'm not sure what participation would involve – certainly Giuliani isn't making any effort to organize people to vote for him – but he will undoubtedly get some votes.  Not a lot, but some.

Oh the sweet irony of having Code Pink communists elect Ron Paul to get us out of Iraq, only to see him decimate the power and size of the federal government most of them have striven so desperately to control for their socialist purposes. He’d eliminate as much federal spending on education as possible. He’d veto budget after budget, until Congress gave him the smallest budget possible. He’d nominate judges who would protect the second amendment. Code Pink would have multiple fits.

They’re going to get amnesty one way or another. They know they’ll never have a better chance than now. I predict an assault-weapons ban bill before it’s over. It’s just a perfect time in the political cycle to accomplish these things. Conditions may never be as good for their interests.

Guiliani is speaking now.

He’s speaking of the love of Christians, based on the greatest Love ever.

He’s talking about common ground and inclusive

12 commitments - do they define “your vision for the country”?

Optimistic and achievable priorities.

Shared views and shared values.

Not going to pretend that we agree on everything.

Promises to listen and tell us his mind.

No promises to save babies.

I’ll protect the values that we share.

(Not our values)

Not always the best example of faith. Grew up in an environment that faith was private or separate. But my belief in God and reliance is core of my life.

Isn’t it better that I tell you what I believe than to pretend.

The event is the political equivilent of a Potemkin village.

"Potemkin village" has come to mean, especially in a political context, any hollow or false construct, physical or figurative, meant to hide an undesirable or potentially damaging situation.

Guiliani:

If I come out here and tell you what I think you want to believe, maybe I’m a good actor. . .

If you do that too long you lose track

Quotes Reagan 80% friend not 100% enemy.

If I believe what I know is right for our Nation.

Never let anyone tell you that your faith is not a part of the country. Our Constitution is not against God. It is based on “One nation under God” and freedom of expression of religion. As full of faith as individual hearts and minds directed.

How many of you have been to NYC? I bet you’re not afraid to come there anymore, right?

Speaking about murders 6 a day in NYC when he first took office as mayor.
“Almost 2000 a year.” (How about the thousands of babies who die today, abortion day in most cities?)

Got pornography out of Times Square.

Guiliani:
“Then we took on the Brooklyn Museum of Art.”

We stood up and said, “Enough.”

Of course you have a Constitutional right of free speech, but we also have a right of free speech . . . and the same right to express.
The Government should never give tax money to desecrate religion.

The believers have every right to participate in government. I believe America is stronger and better because of your participation. It makes our country better, more moral and more decent.

Our country needs to more to protect the innocence of our children.

Newer threats including the internet.

We need to stand up to those who try to remove God from our public

Including those lawsuits to

Freedom of religion is not freedom from religion.

For every right there’s a duty, for every benefit there’s a responsibility.

Newt called NYC welfare reform (hand up not a hand out), “revolutionary.”

Welfare to work. Worked with faith-based organizations.

Now talking about school choice.

Studied religion 16 years and almost entered seminary several times.

First time entered class that didn’t open with a prayer, was in Law school at NYU. He started to make the sign of the cross, everyone stared.

Right to choose home schooling.

It takes a family, not a village, to raise a child.

The quality of education is a civil rights issue for the 21st century in America.

Education in America should be the best in the world and choice will make it that way.

Sign on desk. “I’m responsible.”

Shared goals. 12 committments. (goof “decrease adoptions”) uh

decrease abortions, increase adoptions.

spoke about little girl, Lisa, that died in NYC early in his tenure as mayor. Did everything he could to increase adoptions in NYC. Increased 133%. Found abortions went down 18% during that time. (note— about the same they went down over the country)

We share the same goal to decrease abortion by changing the hearts and minds. First I’ll veto any change on the Hyde amendment (keep government out of funding of abortion) Increase adoptions: get rid of red tape, make $10000 tax break for adoption permanent.

New common ground, even where people of good faith disagree.

Liberty is protected by 3 branches of the government.

Critical that judges be conscientious in their role of interpreting the law, not creating the law.

Each opportunity I have, I will appoint men and women who will interpret the law according to what it means, not what they want it to mean.

His advisors include Ted Olsen (note - one of the great things about Mayor Guiliani bbn)

We may not agree on every opinion, but over the hundreds of opinions, you’ll see a consisteny.

It’s important that we remain aware of the terrorists that attacked us.

We need to have a goal in Iraq: victory.

Victory is achievable.
Our goal on the overall war should be the same as what Reagan had for the cold war: “they lose, we win.”

Stand by our allies, including Israel. One of our strongest allies and the birthplace of our history, religion.

If Israel is to have peace {Palistinians

1. must accept Israels right to exist
2 accept responsibility for terrorism, that it exists and eliminate it.
3 ? I lost it.

Under no circumstance will we allow Iran to become a nuclear power. WE must interfere in Darfur. “Never again” must remain “Never again.”

I feel my faith deeply. Maybe more privately. I belive we serve God best by serving others.

Love, forgiveness and inclusion - salvation - transcendent message. During all of our lives, we each need forgiveness.

If we expect our leaders to be perfect,

We expect them to be honest.

You’ll always know where I stand.

I want to work with the community of faith to build shared goals. Protecting our children’s innocence
decrease abortions increase adoptions
Win the war on terrorism against us.

I’ll continue to extend my hand to you and hope you’ll take it.

All done Guiliani got a standing ovation, but so did everyone. (I missed Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter, but my husband said they gave essentially the same speeches as they did in Texas.) This after noon, we'll have a bloggers' session with Joe Carter (evangelical outpost) I can't find the online voting, but start here or here.
