Los Angeles Times ^ | October 17, 2007

The Roll Call newspaper in Washington reported on its website this evening that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois intends to resign his House seat later this year.

The subscription-only site said Hastert, who had already announced he would not seek reelection in 2008, was calling friends and associates today and telling them of his decision. His early departure would create the need for a special election in his exurban Chicago district, possibly on Illinois' Feb. 5 presidential primary day.

The 65-year-old former high school teacher and wrestling coach, first elected to the U.S. House in 1986 after six years in the Illinois house, has easily won reelection in the state's 14th District in recent years...

I believe it is the coservative part of IL. Northern and deep south are the liberal terretories. Not sure about his district, but it has largely gone republican by a significant majority in the past.

Republicans would be expected to win a general election, but a special election could create special problems for the GOP...

This is definitely not breaking news in illinois. Chicago tribune noted this several weeks ago. Another example of how journalists are incapable of reporting accurately and timely.

Two years too late, but I’m glad he’s leaving. I’ll never forgive his ‘congress is above the law’ insanity in regards to Jefferson.

NEVER.

I thought he’d already announced this. The LAT is just recycling old news to make things look worse for the GOP.

I remember reading several weeks ago that Hastert was not going to seek reelection in 2008, but I can't recall if it mentioned anything about resigning the seat early.

When does the mass retirement of Democrats start? I guess they can’t give up the socialist power. It seems like it’s always Republicans retiring lately.

Actually this is going well. Safe GOP seats are being vacated soon enough to provide some seniority and name recognition to the new occupants, which helps their fundraising for the next general election and ensures safe GOP seats stay safe.

Does these mean there’s a pending indictment in the works? Methinks he doth protest way too much about that whole William Jefferson affair.

Time for some "new blood" who is willing to step up to the plate and "fight the good fight."

Hastert, like many others who ran as conservatives, just ran out of steam and got tired of being pushed by both sides - RINOs and hard chargers.

The above is the equivalent of admitting you don't follow politics.
