Study: Dentist shortage plagues Britain
Associated Press ^ | October 16, 2007 | THOMAS WAGNER

LONDON (AP) — A shortage of National Health Service dentists in England has led some people to pull out their own teeth — or use super glue to stick crowns back on, a study says.

Many dentists abandoned Britain's publicly funded health care system after reforms backfired, leaving a growing number of Britons without access to affordable care.

"I was not surprised to hear those horror stories," said Celestine Bridgeman, 41, of London. "Trying to find good NHS dentists is like trying to hit the lottery because the service is underfunded."

The National Health Service provides care to the vast majority of Britain's people, often for free. Unlike doctors who work for the health service, dentists work on a contract basis and can leave whenever they wish.

Though private treatment by dentists is available, the tradition of publicly funded care means most people rely on it. But now there are fewer dentists to see patients.

In April 2006, the government reformed National Health Service dentistry in an effort to increase patients' access to treatment and to simplify payments. Dentists objected, complaining it reduced income. Some dentists cut the number of health service patients — or stopped taking them altogether.

Forty-five percent of dentists surveyed said they no longer accept National Health Service patients.

This has been posted, but bears repeating everyday. This shortage of dentists and MDs is one of the reason there are so many radical muslim Pakistani medical students in the country.

But doesn't he have all his teeth?

The article says people are PULLING their own teeth because they cannot find a good dentist for free! Yikes!!!

You’d think with the free boobie massage thing there’d be more applicants.

Dentistry isn’t easy mentally or physically. By reducing the incomes, some are bound to leave if there is another profession that pays better or equal to the reduced income and offers more independence.

I hate to think what may happen if we get socialized medicine here. I can imagine them FORCING people to practice medicine and dentistry, and fining or imprisoning those who don’t dance to their orders.

As I recall, this is one theme in the movie “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”. They showed the total lack of motivation for practicing medicine under socialism.

At a former job I shared an office with a guy and one morning I told him the old joke, do you know how we know the toothbrush was invented in West Virginia? Because if it was invented anywhere else it would have been called a Teethbrush.

He wasn't pleased and informed me his wife was from WV.

I then went to my desk to read the paper. I opened the paper and the first headline I saw read, "West Virginia leads nation in toothlessness"

I cut it out and put it on his desk awaiting his return.

Food that's worth eating, maybe.

Up heaya, nobody's got cavities from a lobsteh or a boiled dinneh.

On a related subject, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I read somewhere that Hillary is going to FORCE everyone to join her Hillary Care...

She didn't elaborate on the penalties and I am already scared...

“Forty-five percent of dentists surveyed said they no longer accept National Health Service patients.

Well, they must still be getting enough business, or they wouldn’t be doing this.

So, there is no shortage at all!

I think it's worth posting over and over. One of the major reason's that there is a shortage of Doctors and Dentists is that there's no money to be made in the socialized system. It's also attracting foreign doctors, many of whom are radical muslims.
