Sarkozy under pressure to speak on marriage

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be under new pressure Monday to clarify the state of his marriage, as reports intensified over the weekend that a divorce announcement is imminent from his wife Cecilia.

La Tribune financial newspaper quoted on its Internet site a "generally well-informed source" saying that a divorce will be officially declared by a court on Wednesday.

Le Nouvel Observateur magazine, on its website, said an "official separation announcement should take place Monday."

On Friday there were already rumours of the couple's separation or divorce circulating in newsrooms, but they had not been confirmed.

L'Est Republicain newspaper, which first reported on its website an imminent separation on Friday morning, said it stood by its story and that "the only question is how the Elysee will make the announcement."

By Sunday Christophe Barbier, editor of L'Express magazine, told the news Internet site lepost.fr: "We are heading towards an apparently imminent official announcement.

"It's an unofficial piece of news waiting for official confirmation. Let's say that at this stage it's an open secret.

"The only question now is the timing -- perhaps at the start of this week -- and the form the announcement will take," he said.

The president's official spokesman David Martinon was to hold a press conference Monday morning, at which questions are certain to be asked. So far he has refused to comment on what are termed "press rumours."

Cecilia Sarkozy, 49, was once again absent from the president's side at Saturday's World Cup rugby match against England. She has been barely seen in his company since he took office in May, fuelling growing speculation that she is unhappy in her role as first lady and wants to separate.

The couple have a famously tempestuous relationship, and split up for several months in 2005 when she eloped to New York with an advertising executive. Reports say the former model has recently been seen in Geneva and London.

"All passions come to an end. They are living through what millions of French people go through every year. There was a false end in 2005, but this looks like the real one," Barbier told lepost.fr.

Sarkozy was by his own account "profoundly shaken" by the 2005 separation, and attention is bound to focus on how he copes with a new split.

"(The big question is) Nicolas Sarkozy's behaviour once he loses Cecilia. In 2005 we saw how his mood changed. He was less controlled, more stressed, more aggressive. We'll just have to see what effects there are on his sang-froid and his ability to concentrate on the job," Barbier said.

Is Cecilia breaking his heart and shaking his confidence daily?

“La Tribune financial newspaper quoted on its Internet site a “generally well-informed source” saying that a divorce will be officially declared by a court on Wednesday”

Mon Dieu! That sure is a quickie divorce.

Cecilia lost me first when she proudly declared that “I do not have a drop of French blood in my veins” during the campaign.

She finalized it when she stood up the Bush family in Kennebunkport.

“All passions come to an end. They are living through what millions of French people go through every year. There was a false end in 2005, but this looks like the real one,” Barbier told lepost.fr.”

These people are very different from you and me - they are French. Their ideas about Marriage and Commitment are crazy, and not very Family-friendly.That is what happens when marriage and the family, and religion and Judeo-Christian values are mocked and rejected.

IMHO she has someone waiting in the wings. Cecilia is an uneducated, not too smart, and very shallow woman who cannot face the responsibilities of marriage or public life, only thinking about herself, her “passions” , and basically wanting all the perks and the freebies without the responsibilities.

And pity poor Sarko... he fell for her when he was married with two small children and he officiated at her marriage to entertainer Jacques Martin. She was 8 3/4 months pregnant at the time. She left her husband and and took her two baby girls to run off an live with Sarko who remained married for another 8 years.

I hope she doesn’t get custody of le petit Louis, age 8.

I hope he continues to run the government better than he runs his personal life. He is off to such a terrific start and has accomplished so much in just a few months.

We are praying for him and for his children.

I never realized that marital fidelity was such a big issue in France. Or is this another example of the leftwing’s double standards?

Anything and everything for the MSM to continuously attack non-socialistic politicians, and this is a worldwide phenomena!

It isn't and never has been until now. Francois Mitterand lived openly with his mistress without a peep from the press. But he wasn't friendly to America, so he was safe.

If Sarkozy were a liberal, this would not be happening. More proof that the MSM (France’s, as well as ours) has a political agenda not related to reporting facts.

Word is that Cecilia is essentially an anti-semitic socialist liberal. I can imagine the discussions around the breakfast table in the Sarkozy household, after France's recent rapproachment with the USA over Iran.

Zut alors!

"Live is a ....and then you marry...."well you get the idea.

Divorce or no, Msr. Sarkozy will likely have a snmooth transition into a renewed bachelorhood, and will be better off for it.

So will France.

I have heard the Liberal Socialist part before, but never the anti-Semite part. If you have a source, please let me know.

Difficult to believe because her grandfather, noted composer Isaac Albenez, was a Sephardic Jew, and her maternal side is also mostly Jewish. Even though, most of the Leftists are completely anti-religion.

The answer is, she is tres, tres, French!

Consider this : the Socialist Party candidate for President, Segolene Royal, has four children without being married to their father. Sego dumped him, Francois Hollande, the President of the Socialist Party, a few hours after her defeat.

Even secular Leftist Liberals need to keep up appearances.

Time for “les soixante-huite ards” (baby boomer hippies radicals)to leave the stage.

No. His father was from the minor Hungarian nobility, and his mother was from the Mallah family, one of the oldest Jewish families of Salonika, Greece.

Regardless of what his old lady does, Sarkozy will not be lonely.

He's not gorgeous, but he has "it", and that counts for so much more.

Wait, halt!

(Criminy, one of these days I'm going to learn to read my own links.....)

Sarkozy’s grandfather, Beniko, immigrated to France with his mother. When in France Beniko converted to Catholicism and changed his name to Benedict in order to marry a French Christian girl named Adèle Bouvier. .

Okay, Sarkozy's mother was half-Christian French, and half ethnic Jewish.

With that, and the maternal family lineage, genealogists could have a great time researching Sarkozy's children's family tree.:)

He was not born in France and his parents are not French.

The French will one day regret that they think just by living in France makes one French. Think Mooslims, anyone? How about the EU? No nationalism allowed. Vie vill punish the thought.
