GROUNDS FOR OPTIMISM ABOUT IRAQ — THE CENTER SEEMS TO HOLD
Fouad Ajami is a professor of Middle East Studies at Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies. He’s also the author of several books about the Middle East including most recently The Foreigner’s Gift: The Americans, the Arabs, and Iraqis in Iraq. If you ever have the chance to hear him speak, take it. I did so this evening at a small dinner gathering of journalists and policy experts hosted by the Hoover Institution.
Ajami has made eight trips to Iraq, the last one in August of this year. During that three week visit, he spoke to virtually all of the top leaders in Iraq, representing all three of the major factions, as well as General Petraeus and other U.S. military leaders. On a previous visit, he became one of the very few westerners to speak with Ayatollah Sistani.
Based on what he has seen, Ajami concludes that the tide has turned in Iraq and that the country is basically “working.”

Tomorrow, my sister and I leave for Washington DC — she’s going for business; I’m going for pleasure! [Try to carry on without me (ha!)!]
Oh, Mystery. That is so cool! I missed out on some part of Jon’s life. I thought he was just home on leave. So, did I get it right this time? He’s out of the service and working for the army as a private citizen? Whatever! Hugs to your brave soldier.
JONNY!
Thank you for your two-day-a-week, much appreciated work.
He’s home.....he’s not out of the Army...he just re-enlisted in Iraq for another 6yrs
He will be training Il Guard units for the Army that are ready to deploy.....he is thinking of volunteering with another unit that is going to Afghan in May...he’s still undecided on that..lol
Since he will be training people here in Il he can get an apartment near the training camp that is being constructed.
Oh, OK. So I had it right the first time, and wrong the second time. Or something. I guess it was his looking for furniture that threw me. He’s really heart and soul into protecting this country. What a guy!
And, as always, prayers up for your two brave soldiers.
