Poland not deserting Iraq, says PM
Tuesday, October 9. 2007
Poland should leave Iraq as part of a political plan and wait for a move on the part of the allies, especially keeping an eye on what happens after elections in the USA, Polands Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński has told Polish Radio.
He was reacting to the recent series of attacks on the Polish embassy in Baghdad.
We should leave the Iraq within a framework of a political plan, and not run away or desert because this would mean that we lose everything we already gained there. And we will win nothing and even weaken our position [by leaving the country now], which does not make any sense, said the Prime Minister.
Kaczyński added that with this political plan Poland has to wait until the results of the elections in America.
The PM also said that the Polish embassy in Baghdad has already been transferred to the safer Green Zone. And added that Poland arranged a place for the embassy there earlier. It turned out that it took some time to move and it had tragic consequences.
On Monday four bombs exploded near the Polish embassy. According to the Iraqi police one passer-by died and five others got injured. Last week there was a direct attack on a Polish convoy in Baghdad. In effect Polish ambassador was badly wounded as well as four members of the protection services. One of them died in the hospital.
Poland does not get enough credit for being our allies. They are up there with the UK, Australia, and Canada.
Amen.
Ditto Amen
