Leak severs link to al-Qaeda’s secrets

A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition. It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.

Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.

The founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network.

What is so wrong about blaming the leakers rather than Bush?

Does anyone in this nation have the fortitude to accept blame besides Bush?

This was deliberately leaked by anti Bush radicals like Pflame and Wilson. The media keeps training the public toward passivity by regarding such leaks as heroic.

The leaks serve the media’s interests but not ours. They serve the interest of the wot bumper stiker crowd but not us.

Not until they start sending the leakers to prison for 20 years.

I prefer 6 months to allow appeals, followed by an execution.

“Will they ever plug up any of those leaks?”

Only if they fire the people responsible. And note that Mary McCarthy hasn’t been prosecuted yet.

Whomever did not honor her request is an idiot, but she should not have sent along the site itself. She merely should have taken the downloaded video and put it on one of her sites and pointed them to her site to view the video. But any link in an email is just dying to be clicked and sometimes people click it without even reading the verbiage around the link. It is maddening, but a fact.

Did a fast Google on SITE.

Found that they’re a 501(c) nonprofit that’s a “frequent source” (their phraseology) to WaPo, NYSlime, etc.....

My clearances all went tentoes years ago, but even back in the Stone Age, anybody with a smell of stuff that’s as sensitive as this story presents would have in-house security of their own, plus feds, plus maybe some military just for good measure.

....HOWEVER

I never, ever, double da** NEVER heard of a non-profit doing any sort of high-security work for anybody in the government.

That kind of expertise inside of the Beltway would cost more than the hottest law firm in town would charge to go before the SC.

I KINDA GOT A FAINT WHIFF WHEN I FIRST READ THIS STORY, IT GOT STRONGER AFTER I SAW WAPO’s LITTLE HANDS IN IT, AND AFTER FINDING OUT THAT SITE’s A 501, I CALL BULLSH** ON THIS.

A WHOLE GREAT BIG STEAMING PILE OF IT.

“Problem was, the in/out checks of bags were cursory and nobody ever checked my pockets for a flash drive or other media storage device.”

Well, colonel, let me guess... you knew of this breach in security and you did nothing about it because it wasn’t your job. It is because of people like you who don’t take security issues seriously that we have these leaks to begin with.

>>>SITE is full of BS. If SITE’s “techniques” are so good,...<<<

You might want to read Rita Katz's book about her undercover work exposing Islamic terrorists prior to 9/11 before spouting off!

Because they knew their access to it had already been, or was about to be compromised. In other words, that well was about to run dry anyway. And lots of noise about this supposedly huge damage to our intelligence capabilities is a good way to help obscure the fact that we’ve already penetrated the replacement network.

I can only hope al Qaeda big-wigs are half as gullible as most of the posters on this thread.

This was deliberately leaked by people who know what they’re doing. You can be sure it was fully authorized and with good reason. All is not as it seems in the world of intelligence.

More like doing the work the CIA is incompetent to do!

Note the emphasis ‘from within the Bush administration’. The operatives aligned against Bush within the CIA would be a more accurate guess, IMO. Think Mary McCarthy types.

You nailed it - MSM spin everything negative (especially toward GWB/GOP) - When the very clear reality is such "leaks" are from those who support the "left" who live within the bureaucratic system of Gov't -

Of course the WH/RNC will be inept at firing back and pointing this reality out.

Good catch. I know people in companies that do this kind of work, and had assumed this was another one.

I really don’t give a rat’s ass about her book and I stand by my statement, If SITE’s techniques are so good where’s Bin Laden?
